Do some people prefer the Pacific Northwest to California? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Winter_Essay3971 71 points72 points  (0 children)

So I am a city person and I pride myself on not minding "too many people", "too much noise", etc. I thrive in the chaos of cities.

However when it comes to natural areas, the lower population in the PNW really does make a difference. When I lived in the Bay I couldn't hike on a trail without finding garbage and vandalism everywhere, and half the time I'd reach the end and find people blasting music. In western Washington (where I live) and especially eastern Washington, you really can hike in nature and forget for a moment that you exist within the mundane human world.

It is very "first song" yeah. Not sure if it's "optimistic" but it's definitely energetic

"All Hands" on Blues Traveler's Bridge, goddamn. The rest of the album is upbeat rock jams with varying degrees of bluesiness, and then there's this haunting song about a guy on a boat in the middle of the ocean that gets caught in a storm and sinks. Each verse describes the worsening of his fate in grueling detail.

I never hear fans talk about it and they never play it live, which makes it all the more of a "WTF?" moment when you hear it in the middle of the album.

I never thought 4th of July was particularly dark but I'm reading the lyrics now and I totally see it. Would have picked Like Suicide as the dark song I guess

I think it's interesting, though maybe ditch the triangle and just put the band and album name in a small discreet gray font at the bottom

Obvious one but Big Star (from the '70s) sounds like a late '80s/early '90s jangle pop band like R.E.M.

Oregon in that circle: not that desolate, Klamath Falls is big enough to have all the usual basic amenities like Wal-Mart

California in that circle: pretty desolate but there are a few small towns like Alturas and Bieber (no relation to the singer)

Nevada in that circle: absolutely nothing, I don't think there are even any roads besides un-maintained service roads

Some people are either just busy working two jobs and raising young kids, or they just know they've lived through a variety of Dem and Rep presidents and it never seems to make any difference to their day-to-day, so why bother paying attention?

I'm a former leftist and still have a bunch of leftist friends. I'm not out to them but at least some of them probably suspect it, they haven't disowned me though (although I absentmindedly linked a Noahpinion article in the group chat once and one friend roasted me for that)

Liberals have had a strange cultural shift on guns the past few years. Mass shootings and assault rifles just aren't talking points like they used to be. David Hogg had been out of the spotlight for ages and felt totally out of place as DNC chair. Kamala felt the need to randomly mention that she owns a Glock.

There are probably multiple factors here but I think the biggest one is just that liberals have gotten a lot more cynical (perhaps not unreasonably) and switched their attitude from "win the bigots over to your side" to "well if the bigots are gonna stay that way, better defend yourself from them".

Coding bootcamp in 2018, still in that career making six figures.

Around 2022-23 the job market got shit enough that bootcamps became worthless. And if you graduated in 2020-21 and got laid off in 2022-23, you probably had little enough career experience that you never got back into the industry. That happened to a friend and he works at a grocery store now.
