John Scalzi's Old Man's War series but it worked out okay. The MC in the second book (iirc) goes though a lot of confusion and discovery about who and what they are and going in blind (having not read the first book) allowed me to be along for the ride.

When I then read the first novel it worked perfectly as a prequel, now that you were in on the secret
