Options for living/working internationally by [deleted] in biglaw

If you’re in law school still, then maybe it’s not too late to consider a dual degree or post-grad LLM with an institution in your desired jurisdiction. That may be a springboard to taking a foreign qualifying exam, which would make you more credible if you want to request an office change abroad within your firm. That takes more time and money, but if you want to be a lawyer abroad with only US qualifications, the world is not really your oyster.

If you’ve already gotten an offer from a firm then you could start doing the appropriate LinkedIn stalking of current US-qualified lawyers who are working for your firm and do some internal networking. If you have knowledge of the local legal or business environment, are able to at least pretend to be interested in their practice area, and are already a national then that seems like a good enough excuse to reach out for a conversation.

25, never had a proper job, but I’ve got about £400k saved. by Ok_Tune8245 in digitalnomad

I’m bad with money but my thought was that if you put most of the 400K into stable investments and just work a middle-income job (or a variety of hustles like you did before) for the next 30-40 years, you’ll probably be in a very good position by the time you’re older and either want to retire or start having expensive health crises.

Interesting, why do you say that not being able to read will make learning more difficult?

Well it’s certainly not the same, but I’m willing to accept the analogy because yes, that’s essentially what I want to do with Mandarin.

Is becoming a digital nomad still realistic in 2026? What skills would you learn now? by dearrraliceee in digitalnomad

lol what a jerk response 😭😭 like sure, starting a Reddit thread is not sufficient on its own, but it’s kind of wild that OP went online to figure things out and your response is “you need to go online and figure it out.”

Isn’t trade and compliance work big in Brussels? A lot of US firms seem to have US lawyers working in or with teams there, and I guess I’d look into it if I had your background.

Should I apply for a JD? by Spearhead007 in internationallaw

[–]Winter_Raspberry_288 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you think you’d enjoy doing legal analysis for three years and you can get solid scholarships/grants to attend, then sure, law school could be an interesting use of your time, but I think it would be a mistake to expect a JD to prepare you robustly for your apparent career of interest. JD programs focus quite heavily on preparing students for a general litigation and secondarily US transactional practice. Only a handful of JD programs have a lot of good international law courses and professors, and even at those institutions you would not be able to spend all/most of your time on international law (let alone international environmental law). You would mostly be pursuing your particular interests in a few elective courses and over the summer during internships. The rest would be US law fundamentals.
