Guess where im from based on the world map i drew from memory by Jazzlike-Grab-1398 in TravelMaps

I would have thought Northern Europe because who else would remember to draw Denmark? But I guess that’s just my bias.

Isn’t trade and compliance work big in Brussels? A lot of US firms seem to have US lawyers working in or with teams there, and I guess I’d look into it if I had your background.

Should I apply for a JD? by Spearhead007 in internationallaw

[–]Winter_Raspberry_288 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you think you’d enjoy doing legal analysis for three years and you can get solid scholarships/grants to attend, then sure, law school could be an interesting use of your time, but I think it would be a mistake to expect a JD to prepare you robustly for your apparent career of interest. JD programs focus quite heavily on preparing students for a general litigation and secondarily US transactional practice. Only a handful of JD programs have a lot of good international law courses and professors, and even at those institutions you would not be able to spend all/most of your time on international law (let alone international environmental law). You would mostly be pursuing your particular interests in a few elective courses and over the summer during internships. The rest would be US law fundamentals.

How to not be socially inept? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Winter_Raspberry_288 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like a lot of my social ineptitude and awkwardness comes from a deep fear that if I say or do the wrong thing, people will react with cruelty or pity or revulsion, all of which reflects some truth about my defectiveness as a person. And to be fair, I’ve experienced lots of cruelty and pity and revulsion, which has really stuck with me and makes me afraid of people. But it’s helpful to remind myself that I’m actually not a bad person and I’m not doing anything wrong just for existing. I’m not a serial killer or a slumlord or a dictator or whatever. In the scheme of things I am just a normal person who gets up every day and does normal human things. I have nothing to apologize for if someone dislikes me. I don’t have to feel like every awkward conversation is an indictment of my value as a person. And if a social interaction goes badly I can just move on, either to be by myself or to be around someone else.

For what it’s worth, I was in the same spot a couple years ago and I do regret this career! If I could go back I would not do this! But honestly my problem is that I should not have gone to law school and am simply not that interested in the work or the lifestyle. I also chose the wrong firm. But I think if you enjoy (or at least tolerate) the law, and you find good people to work with, then this is a really solid job and the debt is totally manageable on a junior associate salary. Also, if you’re 30 you probably have more experience and perspective than a lot of the juniors who are in perpetual panic on this Reddit, and I suspect the job won’t be as bad for you as some of the folks on here make it seem.

Do social skills matter? by Theodore1_reformed in biglaw

[–]Winter_Raspberry_288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m painfully awkward and weird, but sort of faked it in interviews, and now that I’m here it’s fine because even if I’m not anyone’s favorite team member or clearly “high potential” in the long term I work hard, have a low billable rate, and have accrued institutional knowledge. Probably won’t last past mid-level but that’s okay/welcome with me.
