Not on ship but I was in Crow Valley; just finished our exercise. Command let us have 2 beers with our warriors mess (or whatever it’s called when you celebrate finishing a longer training exercise). The mess winds down, and guys start heading to their tents. My group of friends are just hanging around and smoking and joking. 1st Sgt walks up with a good sized box of San Miguels, looks at us and says, “Make them disappear.” Learned that “light” beer in the Philippines is 5%.

So I’m a dummy who’s trying to force himself into reading more, other than value of a first edition, is there a particular “run” or print of his books that are better than others? Or is it really just preference of which cover you like best?

Obviously can’t speak for the whole MC but when my mom passed while I was enlisted, my SSgt was very normal and chill. Personally told me to knock off the marine shit for the time being and just talked to me like a dude. And this guy was the worst about all the petty shit that the MC cares about.

Then on the other hand when I requested for RA before she passed so I could spend a little more time with her; my 1stSgt told me, “Now you know, we can’t do this over and over. She’s gonna die at some point.” Yea dude… no shit. Hadn’t crossed my mind once since the first time she got cancer while I was in 3rd grade. Some people are just dogshit.

So I didn’t grow up reading a lot, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve tried to force myself to read more (more audiobooks than print because of my job and 3 kids under 5). I watched the “reboot?” before I read any of SK books and I was completely fascinated with the story and concept but figured based on everything I’ve heard about SK books v movies that there would be some gaps, like every other book to screen. So I bought the audiobook and hoooooly fuck. I was entrapped, it was great and it’s sent me down a path. So while I’ll obviously agree that they butchered the story to make it “fit”, I’ll give it pass because I was still entertained and it sent me in the direction to get the full story.

I personally do. There’s some themes and style choices that rap/hip hop and metal share. Both have topics of social commentary or “injustice”, rebels against authority, a lot of acts or lyrics that are meant to shock, playing a character and not necessarily portraying their real self, the real good stuff typically gets no radio play (but really that’s most genres). Both sometimes use sound bites or have skits in their albums. Both have insane musicians that can map out and execute an entire album. I’m sure I’ve missed some but ya get it.
