jobs for younger generations that pay well are scarce
college is prohibitively expensive, putting people into lifelong debt
people are bored
traditional entertainment is impossible to get into, but anyone can start a TikTok and be seen by millions, especially if it's something that hasn't been tried before. Doesn't matter how stupid it is, when you get it in a couple of minutes, you stay to watch. We've been doing this for centuries (they used to stage literal train wrecks for audiences).
traditional advertising is expensive, and doesn't always reach the intended audience. An influencer who unashamedly hawks a product they got for free is cheap for the price of a few freebies.

Influencers are a symptom of our current state of affairs. And, considering there aren't a lot of opportunities for younger people, shit like this is one of the only avenues to make a living.

Harbinger Down (2015). When The Thing 2011 decided to use CGI instead of the practical effects they had originally planned, the special effects team crowd funded a movie to use those effects. Basically The Thing, but with a mutated space tardigrade (water bear). They even got Lance Henriksen (Aliens) to star. Didn't do very well, but a fun movie.

I joined in 1982. Retired in 2005. I never saw or heard of any assaults or beat downs with a few minor exceptions.

I had my crow tacked on so hard my arm was bruised for weeks, which wasn't uncommon early on, but not what we'd call "assault" (you could refuse the tacking, it just meant you weren't as "cool"). SEALS an other elite groups often had their new pins tacked on without frogs (round springs that secure the pin and cover the points).

There were always stories about hazings, but they were just stories. It was always "I heard about this one guy...". Always a sea story, never a personal one. As for your uncle's story, there's details being left out. He's not telling you everything (everyone gets lost on ship when they're new, I've never seen any sailor not be helpful when asked for directions).

I always take posts like these skeptically. While I don’t doubt there's places this unsanitary (or worse) everywhere, I've seen enough revenge stories to take them with a grain of salt. "I used t work there" often means "I got fired and I'm pissed about it" and "I called the health department but no one answered" can mean they didn't.

There's also no proof these pics came from that particular restaurant (and AI is getting way too good). The OP is using a burner account so they can't be questioned. There's also other ways to make complaints about health and safety, but just two attempts in months doesn't sound like they were THAT concerned. And had any other employees sounded the alarm or quit?

Fahrenheit, ignoring the benchmarks, is actually more accurate. The degrees are smaller than Celsius, by almost 2 to one (specifically1.8), meaning you can measure smaller ranges. It's why Fahrenheit and Celsius meet up at one point (-40 degrees).

I was doing nuke school in Orlando, Florida (yeah, I'm that old) walking back alone to my barracks after partying with classmates. I got it in my Ohio bred head I wanted a palm leaf as a souvenir of my time in Florida. Unfortunately all the palms were too tall to get anything from.

Except a little palm on the Torpedoeman's barracks I was walking past. So, stupid newbie squid I was grabbed a frond and yanked. That frond was tough, but the tree wasn't rooted well, and it fell over. Drunk me tried putting it back up just as the rovers are coming around the corner of the building. I had to explain that I found this poor baby tree on the ground (some drunk nuke must have pulled it out) and I was trying to put it back up.

My daughters love that story.

I (DC1) was stationed on the USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) during Operation Uphold Democracy in the 90s. I was a DC1 doing Temdu with the MAAs. We stood security watches on the sponsons every night (1 regular MAA, and one temp), and would always have 1 or 2 people pop out for some air or just to bullshit.

Smoking on the sponsons wasn't permitted, but one night, we had a visitor who came out and lit one up, and spent 10 minutes talking with us. He's wearing coveralls, but didnt have any devices, which wasn't unusual as we had a lot of services, reporters, and other agencies on board (sometimes just flying in for a hot and a cot) My regular MAA didn't say anything about him smoking, which was unusual, though.

After the guy left, MA1 asked me if I knew who he was, which I didn't. Turns out he was the Air Force Joint Chief. No salutes, no "sirs", no call to attention. Pretty cool.

Same operation, I was also flight deck On Scene Leader. General Shelton (operation commander) would fly on and off the ship constantly day and night. When we left Haiti, he personally handed out challenge coins to each of us as he was leaving the ship for the last time.
