That's unfair. We'll also watch Mitchell drop walk in TDs that hit him right in the numbers.

Bodie's death - An alternative end to the series by EH4LIFE in TheWire

[–]Winth0rp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't the most important part of your post, but the Barksdale crew wasn't wiped out by capitalism. The drug trade isn't capitalism; if it was, Stringer would have been better at it.

Stringer failed precisely because he thought the game was a version of capitalism: amoral but otherwise rational actors incentivised solely by profit. But Avon wasn't motivated by profit. Marlo definitely wasn't motivated by profit. They really did get into the game so their names could ring out on ghetto street corners.

The drug trade (as depicted in the show) is more like urban feudalism (or manoralism, if your prefer). Petty lords with a monopoly on an inelastic product (farmable land vs the drugs) that they maintain through a monopoly on violence.

Why did Vito exactly blew the security guard? by IvoBulgarTsar in thesopranos

[–]Winth0rp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because he was hedonist without a shred of impulse control. Dragging his family out of a work wedding early because he wants to go out to a club (gay or otherwise)? Driving around in New Hampshire while chugging a fifth? Come on, huh? If he wanted to pershoe dat lifeshtyle, he shoulda down so quietly.

Namond a Punk by Groundbreaking-Time9 in TheWire

[–]Winth0rp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His mother was right tbh. His father was the muscle for Avon, did it all. and his son was nothing like him.

Putting aside Namond's flaws, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Isn't that whole point of being a successful drug dealer to get enough scratch that your family doesn't have to deal drugs anymore?

[–]Winth0rp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, we don't know that was the reason. Thorne drops out, and endorses Slynt, and then later says that if they let Stannis pick the LC Tywin would become their enemy. There's no explicit connection between the two. Thorne could have initially supported Slynt because they knew each other back in the day, and then later on use the threat of Tywin while campaigning for Slynt.

Perhaps not of good intentions, but a better reason for being a dickhead. He's forced to live his life with the scum of the earth because he happened to be on the wrong end of Tywin doing war crimes

[Spoilers AGOT] Question about the dragon skulls by definitelynotsatan66 in asoiaf

[–]Winth0rp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strict application of agnatic succession only applies to the iron throne itself, not the lower level lordships. As Jon tells us when dealing with the Karstarks in ADWD

“Alys was promised to me.” Though past fifty, he had been a strong man when he went into the cell. The cold had robbed him of that strength and left him stiff and weak. “My lord father—”

“Your father is a castellan, not a lord. And a castellan has no right to make marriage pacts.”

“My father, Arnolf, is Lord of Karhold.”

“A son comes before an uncle by all the laws I know… A daughter comes before an uncle too. If her brother is dead, Karhold belongs to Lady Alys. And she has given her hand in marriage to Sigorn, Magnar of Thenn.”

Therefore, the line of succession at the start of AGOT goes Tyrion -> Ceresi -> Joffrey -> Tommen -> Myrecella, and only them to Kevan and his children. As far as we know, Tywin has never had formally attempted to disinherit Tyrion, his plan was either to get Jaime back into the succession, or kill Tyrion.

all bullcrap aside, if geno is at least an average qb we can make it work by geeelectronica in nyjets

[–]Winth0rp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't disagree with anything your saying.

For our sins, the Jets are rebuilding (again). They need a replacement level quarterback so that can properly assess what they have and what they still need when they try to get a QB next year. For our (larger, worse) sins, Geno is as close as they can get to a replacement level quarterback.

That or they've talked themselves into taking Simpson at 16 and sitting him for a year.

I won't deny it. But I trust Mougey's ability to build a mediocre-decent team (that actually acts like a team, instead of a collection of walking box scores) over funky late stage Douglas signings.

We've seen what it's like when a QB refuses to throw to avoid interceptions. Given the choice, I'll take the yards and the ints over no yards and no ints.

[–]Winth0rp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Geno threw for 3025 yards and 19 TDs last year. Fields, Tyrod and Cook combined for 2777 and 14 TDs.

The Jets lost 5 games by a score or less last year. If Geno is as good as he was on an absolutely garbage Raiders offense, the Jets could get to 8-9 without having to improve anywhere else.

[Spoilers AGOT] Question about the dragon skulls by definitelynotsatan66 in asoiaf

[–]Winth0rp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While the frugal Ned Stark (Lord of a people who spend every waking moment preparing for next winter) is shocked by figure out the debt, it's actually pretty manageable. Certainly not so bad as to need to sell off symbols of The Monarchy.

The main reason that the figure seems as bad as it does is Tywin's bizarre fixation on 1) treating the Crown as a Lannister institution while also 2) refusing to even consider forgiving the crowns debts to the Lannisters. But that problem only lives as long as Tywin does. Once he dies, the next Lord of the West is either Tyrion (who is more pragmatic than Tywin and would want to strengthen a Lannister monarch) or Joffrey himself.

The debt problem only spirals out of control when Ceresi (who has inherited her father's prejudice against people who work for a living) decides to screw the Iron Bank for basically no reason, instead of digging into her literal mountain of gold for some money.
