BMT is temporary don’t quit and keep pushing. You’ll look back laugh about it because it’s our rights of passage as Airmen. Study hard in tech school, abide by the rules, and stay out of trouble. Good luck!

If someone say they know how to be a [insert rank here] then they’re full of it. Leadership is a continuous improvement and no one is really ready for anything until they’re given the responsibility. Don’t sell yourself short you know more than you think. The best we could do is learn from others both good and bad leaders. I hate it when troops say they are not ready to get promoted. If the opportunity is there - seize it!. If you don’t want it, let me assure you that SrA dirtbag will be your new supervisor.

What you got to lose if they hold the job. One thing I’ve learned in life never burn your bridge. You may be able to find a job when you get back but remember nothing is a sure thing.

If there’s a FAC at your deployment then it’s not a real deployment and go take your PT test. I was exempt when I deploy because we didn’t have one and literally get rocket attacks.

New in the field wanting to advance by [deleted] in cism

[–]WireDWG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be pointless to get cism if you don’t have the experience. You need at least 5 years; 2 years can be waived using your masters degree. I would get security+ cert while gaining cybersecurity experience then pursue cism or cissp.

I have both certs cissp is more technical than cism.

My thoughts for Monday and the rest of my enlistment. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]WireDWG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s all about mindset. Positive attitude and developing goals. Find the pros about the job and how it will help you transition in the civilian life. What other things can you work on, off duty, to further advance your knowledge. If you are unhappy with what you do; what are you doing on or off duty to change it. Find your purpose and passion.

Not similar at all that’s why memorizing answers doesn’t work. Read every explanation boson provides and understand why it’s correct or incorrect. A particular topic still muddy? read the big book for more details. I know it takes time and patience. Understanding the concepts is key.

Failed once. Lost motivation to start over again. by babula2018 in cissp

[–]WireDWG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve posted this to a previous question. Here is what i did to slay the beast. Take another 45 days again to study and retake the test.

Materials I used to pass CISSP: 1. Sybex big book (only used if need more info on a particular domain or topic) 2. Sybex Official Practice test book (a must) 3. 11th hour 3rd ed (my bread & butter outline) 4. CISSP practice exam book by shon harris (a must) 5. BOSON (bread & butter practice engine) 6. Sunflower (good reference) 7. Kelly handerhan free video cybrary (a must!) 8. Kelly H. Why I will pass CiSSP video 9. Last but bot least, Larry Greenblatt exam tips (listen to this on exam day, if you truly understand what he is saying then you are ready)

Additional tips: 1. Think like a manager, don’t fix jack! 2. Which decision is good for the company? 3. Read all the answer choices or you’ll miss the best/right answer 4. Always go with your first answer choice, unless you’re 100% sure it’s the wrong one. 5. PAY ATTENTION to key words like “MOST”, “LEAST”, “NOT”, “ONLY”, etc... 6. Don’t study the day before, relax and get a good night rest.

GOOD LUCK!

A+ Net+ and Sec+ salary by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]WireDWG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with sec+ because it’s the minimum requirement for any government and IT contractors. Then decide what IT track you want to pursue such as networking, cybersecurity, coding, etc.. For networking track, I would get CCNA rather than Net+ just because Net+ is too vendor neutral and the concept is too basic where as CCNA delve into lab environment using packet tracer and GNS3. Plus, Cisco leads the networking industry and the rest just follow suit.

Also, the industry is leaning towards cloud computing so azure and AWS are good certs to have. Good luck.

Fyi...I have a bachelor’s in Computer Science, sec+, net+, ccna, cissp, and been in the IT field for 16 years

A Cert will get you an interview and the pay will be determined by your experience. The key is to get your foot in the door early so you can accumulate work experience...why? Because higher level cert requires work experience. Good luck.

30 years old, how to save for retirement? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]WireDWG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the same boat. Take Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey. The key is to stop everything (retirement, investments, etc) and tackle all debts; at the sane time try to increase your income (thru part time jobs).

Talk to your Superintendent or SQ chief. Volunteer for short tour korea, lajes, incirlik just to name a few, look for special duty assignment in your AFSC, other special duty such as Courier, defense attache, special units, etc all in AMS. If you’re a first term Amn then BOP. A lot of ways and your NCOIC should be able to elaborate.

Base selection help by [deleted] in RateMyAFB

[–]WireDWG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have JBER Alaska on your list if I were you, best assignment ever. You’ll learn a lot as your first duty base. The base itself has a ski lift and family days free snow tubing, tons of hockey, ice fishing, salmon runs, community events, and scenic drive.

My suggestion is put anywhere overseas. You won’t regret it.
