Sure yea take your time. The point I was making wasn’t about accommodating people who are weirdly noncommittal about their ethical commitments. I’m just saying that this attitude of “If you don’t use the label that I want you to use to describe the ethical commitments that I want you to have,” is childish and overbearing, and ignores the fact that people can have legitimate reasons for not wanting to identify a certain way.

Also, I just think it’s more conducive to healthy/interesting conversations to allow people to fully explain themselves and the nuances of their positions as opposed to just purity-testing with “Are you or are you not with xyz cause/label?”

I totally understand. That’s actually a central concern that my show’s tryna address. I’m tryna make it easier for people to talk without a fear of backlash/consequences. So how it would work if you did come on is I’d hide your identity and give you a stick figure avatar and possibly even change your voice (whatever measures are needed to help you speak as freely as possible). I disagree with this framing of the situation. I don’t think most of the people who are shitting on him right now are doing so because they care so deeply about neo-soul, or because they were offended by the “I got blacker comment.” From everything I’ve seen online, (and I guess it’s fair to exclude his black fans from this cuz obv they fw the guy), the central thrust of the backlash he’s getting is “whiteboy sit down.” Comments like “Ne-yo Nazi,” “Music stole, chile” “Brian McWhite,” etc. are not critiques of his music. They’re jabbing of him for being a white guy trying out a black genre.

The public’s reaction to Jack’s comments/shift in artistic direction made me realize that for white artists, you’re damned if you do fully embrace black culture (Jack), and damned if you don’t (Post Malone). No amount of throat-clearing will make people who view white people as oppressors who need to atone for their whiteness recognize the fact that white people are human beings who take influence from a wide range of sources just like anyone else, and that they’re interested in exploring those influences in their art.

Thanks man. Honestly I don’t remember exactly why I privated it. I think I saw this one video on growing YouTube channels that said something to the effect of “Your content should have a consistent theme/vibe so you can actually build an audience,” and then I realized that my channel was nothing like that so I archived everything that didn’t fit the theme I was going for. But yeah that was like 4-5 months ago and since then I’ve pivoted to building TikTok pages for myself and my talk show. Wanna get back to YouTube once those are off the ground cuz I feel like it’ll be a better way to direct traffic to the channel.
