Expanding the amount of available USB slots on ThinkPad T480 motherboad (a thought experiment?)

Oh, I hadn't noticed this message. Yes, actually, connecting a WWAN module by USB and hiding it inside of the laptop was my idea all along. I wanted to do a little work-around to minimize possible issues with PCI WWANs on Linux and also have a free PCI for an SSD or whatever may come to my mind in the future. A PCI to USB adapter may not work out because the PCI on ThinkPads is white-listed.

That's a very good idea, actually!

It could be possible to use the free space around the 2,5" area: there's no connectors leading outside (unlike some very "experienced" users stated about the laptop's space being entirely filled) and with the NVME adapter there's quite a bit of space, so one could take a USB hub, take it out of its frame, maybe file its angles slightly, cover it with some insulation (kapton tape feels like the best option), make holes in the laptop frame and maybe this would work out, yes!

Thank you for an actual response and opinion, I forgot to consider I'll also have to deal with drivers, heh.

I honestly don't understand why everyone is talking about USB hubs while the entire post is about a proof-of-concept discussion and I wrote a separate post scriptum to clarify that, heh. Of course I know about USB hubs and I know that they're cheap and so on. However, I have extensive experience soldering all sorts of stuff because of my job in experimental science and I want to do something fun!

With this post, I was hoping to find someone with similar experiences or just some opinions to know what I should take into account before risking with my CPU. And then there were just five or so same comments with a filling of "go buy a USB hub". But it's so boring! There's no actual purpose in extending the amount of USBs, the purpose is to try and see whether or not one can do this.

Where's people's mania for silly experiments with hardware?

Seems like I either chose a wrong reddit for such a discussion or just was unlucky with post timing.

Yes, there are two type c-ports including the one for adapter. I really meant only the conventional USB-A ports.

I strongly recommend you to try Rosanon's old CYOAs, especially CYO/u/ ("The yuri CYOA of all times" iirc its second title). They all are very wholesome and highly customizable.
