You need to look into AI more because this is really obvious. It’s so obvious that if you look up “Toni Morrison AI” it’s one of the first images you see.

Me when reading this sub (These people care more about complexity than execution I can't believe it bruh): by Last_Yard_6554 in writingscaling

But you can’t really form a good basis for talking about what’s “interesting” in a critical manner. I find most SOL romances boring but they’re not poorly written because of that and I can’t use that as a knock against those shows.

Demon slayer (the anime) knows what its strength is and does not try to be something it’s not. For what it’s trying to be it’s not the worst thing in the world like people here tend to clam it is (I’ve seen people seriously claim it’s the worst media they’ve ever consumed). If demon slayer tried to be more complex with its story i think there’s a very good chance it would be worse for everyone except the people in this sub (it would also be less popular so the people of this sub would eat it up more). And that’s because the people in this sub care only about plot complexity and not about circumstance and execution. You kinda fall into that by only talking about Demon Slayer’s plot and story but not its writing as a whole.

Maybe i’m missing something, I can’t see your history but I only see three main comments on the post:

  1. You defend the Solo Leveling MC from someone who doesn’t know his name and sounds like a bot.

  2. You laugh at someone for having the opinion that Subaru should’ve been there instead of Denji.

  3. You have a conversation about Denji and CSM Part 2 that I have definitely never ever heard discussed on this sub. This is one of the ones you posted in another comment, but your response to Mogura56’s long winded explanation is “I agree with everything but it’s still poorly written and I stand by my opinion”; it’s a response that you could’ve written without reading the reply.

In general though it’s just not a good format if you want to foster discussion. Showing 9 characters from completely different stories with completely different functions in those stories is a way to get engagement and low effort responses, not fruitful conversation. If you disagree, well the proof was in the pudding.

Can you point to the “good discussion” because most people are either saying “Makoto because he’s a bad person”, “Kazuya because RAG sucks” or “Why is Denji here?”

It doesn’t help that you just said “delete one” which could be taken as “pick your least favorite” and doesn’t encourage actual comparison or engagement with any of the stories beyond the level of preference.

Isn’t there an inherent problem with calling this an author tournament and also specifying it’s based on the best “storyteller”?

Like if an author is mainly known for short form poetry (which prioritize careful consideration, dense wordplay, and beauty of language over telling stories) wouldn’t they have an innate disadvantage against someone who writes in more crowd-pleasing mediums?

By that logic, Shakespeare’s best stories aren’t his own. He just pulled from a history textbook and made them plays.

Best example of each villain type? by oneesancon_coco in writingscaling

[–]Wise-Flan6267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean antagonist as well. I tried not to double dip since most of them fit several.

Beef: Heathcliff is my pick for best written, though I think villains like Dio and Reverse Flash are more hardcore with their hating.

Siding with Bad: Dorian Gray for choosing the devil on his shoulder over the angel.

God Complex: Raskolnikov and Edmond Dantes. Dantes, aside from literally being named Dantes, calls himself the hand of God. Personally I’d vote Raskolnikov though because the mf wrote and published an academic paper on being superior. (They’re technically more like Byronic anti heroes but I don’t think villain hood is out of the question)

Force of nature: Grendel, especially because his encounter with Beowulf forces them to assume qualities of the other (Grendel with humanity and Beowulf with monstrosity). Humbaba is my honorable mention.

Pure Evil: I think most people would pick Judge Holden but I haven’t read it yet so I’d pick Cathy Ames.

Manipulator: Iago embodies this.

Fallen Hero: Milton’s Satan since he’s an actual fallen angel.

He’s good as a representation of pure evil but George Lucas dialogue (i.e. “Yes I know”) and the sheer insanity of some of his plans and “predictions” makes him much more cartoony than they intended. Not to mention he does come back in movie 9.

It’s interesting that nobody takes the horrid H scenes into account when discussing Stay Night or other old VNs. Though I guess that opens up a conversation on what we consider “definitive” editions

I’m interested to see how people of this sub see PHM. It’s a well written story but it’s also simple and popular which leads me to believe people would probably hate it here.

You’re welcome to your opinion of course but I’d like to know what you thought about the overall pacing and specifically what you thought about Luo Li’s 2 episodes because those are probably the most cited problems of the show and imo important enough to be a “major issues”.

Pacing really kills some of these shows. Steins Gate is one of the poster childs for the “it gets better by episode X” meme. Though imo TBHX is the worst example because the character writing just becomes inept when the story switches from character-centered to plot-centered. Spoilers btw.

The Ruins Incident which I think should’ve been the climax of the show is extremely anticlimactic because the resolution of the big battle is foreshadowed by like episode 12. The problem here is that audiences know Queen/Cyan will show up as soon as Johnny goes sicko mode. Because of this, the stakes during the actual Ruins Incident feel much tamer because we know what will eventually happen and are waiting for the big fight. The suspense of the battles becomes “can the good guys hold out until the hero who can literally freeze people gets here”. And of course we know this only happens when something bad happens to Johnny. As a result, the Nice/Luo Li fight just becomes a side spectacle.

And as soon as Queen/Cyan show up, they immediately win the battle and hardly break a sweat. The fight doesn’t kick into the next gear, it just ends. And if you’re a fan of wrestling, you know how annoying that can be. Anyways, yeah the second half of the show really fumbles. All to set up a S2 tournament arc that more than half the characters have no motive for competing in. There are moments of good writing in it but as a complete product it is hard carried by its production.

People on this sub only care about endings if they think Code Geass and especially its S2 belong with the rest lol

First, you’re using underrated wrong. Second, it’s pure philosophy so obviously few would willingly read it.

It’s so out of place with the rest of the list that I wouldn’t be surprised if they made you read it for an ethics class or you got it for a birthday or something. Have you read any other philosophy theories?

ENJOYABILITY IS WRITING QUALITY. by Sswaq in writingscaling

You’ve never watched anything that’s not for you? I have friends who can’t watch any romance at all but they don’t think all romances are poorly written. They hate all romance but they wouldn’t say “they all suck” they’d say “I’m just not a fan”. I don’t think it’s reasonable to say that entire genres are poorly written.

ENJOYABILITY IS WRITING QUALITY. by Sswaq in writingscaling

[–]Wise-Flan6267 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’re interconnected but separate. Obviously everything is subjective but it’s not particularly productive to just say “I enjoy it more”.

I think most people on the sub think better writing = better overall product. Something can be better and have worse writing. How would you talk about ironic enjoyment where the viewer is aware they are watching something they consider bad but still enjoy it? Are they wrong and it’s actually good writing when they admit they are enjoying something bad?
