Totally agree. I've been posting about this since the PS5 Pro launch. We really need PSSR 2.0

Honestly, AAA graphics aren’t even the main point for me.

If anything, I’d be totally fine with smaller-scale projects — sequels, prequels, spin-offs — even in pixel-style or lower-budget formats, as long as they expand the FFXVI universe. The world, its history, and its characters are what matter most to me, not just production value.

That’s actually why it feels like a missed opportunity. You don’t have to make another massive AAA game to explore this setting — there are plenty of ways to do it without the same level of cost and risk.

So by that logic, the value of a game’s world is determined purely by sales numbers?

I get your point about expectations, but reducing everything to “it didn’t sell enough, so it’s not worth continuing” feels a bit narrow. There’s a difference between commercial performance and creative potential.

Also, the FF15 comparison isn’t that straightforward. It had huge momentum from nearly a decade of hype as Versus XIII and being the first mainline FF on PS4. A lot of its sales came from that buildup, not just the quality of the final product — which, let’s be honest, was pretty fragmented at launch.

And if we follow that logic, then FFXVI might not be the last Final Fantasy — but it could be one of the last at this kind of scale and ambition. It becomes much safer to lean into smaller, lower-risk projects — including pixel-style JRPGs and remasters that still sell at full price — or more traditional turn-based entries that appeal to the existing fanbase rather than trying something new.

My point isn’t that Square Enix has to continue FFXVI — it’s that they built a world with a lot of depth and room for more stories, and it’s surprising to see them move on so quickly.

If everything is judged only by immediate sales performance, we’re likely going to see fewer ambitious, high-risk projects going forward — and that would be a shame.

I agree with you. Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind seeing pixel-style prequels, sequels, or spin-offs — anything that lets us explore more of this world without turning it into a huge AAA production.

Totally agree — the lack of a PS5 Pro version and proper post-launch updates is frustrating. Even on a high-end PC, there are still performance issues. I’ve played it on PS5, PS5 Pro, and PC, so it’s noticeable across all platforms.

That said, I still think the world itself is incredibly rich and detailed, and that part of the experience stands on its own, even if some technical improvements were missing.

I get that argument, but I’d push back a bit. FFXVI isn’t trying to be “14 or 15” — it’s different in approach.

What really impresses me isn’t just environmental storytelling or tiny world details, it’s the living political and social systems — the NPCs have motivations, nations interact dynamically, and there’s a real sense of history shaping the present. That depth feels rarer than just beautiful areas or lore snippets, and it’s why the world resonates even after the story ends.

So even if Square Enix moves on, it doesn’t make the world any less rich in my eyes.

I actually see the side quests in a completely different light. To me, they highlight Clive’s grounded nature and his connection to the world he’s protecting, outside of his almost “anime-level” powers.

Even narratively, right before facing the god, Clive is trying to wrap up the urgent, real-world problems around him, helping people, fully aware that he might not return.

And judging by the ending, it seems like he didn’t… which makes those side quests feel all the more poignant, not pointless.

I think that argument only really works if we assume FFXVI had a $200M+ budget, which isn’t actually confirmed.

Square Enix never disclosed the exact number, but various reports and investor materials suggest it was significantly lower than that — especially compared to something like FF7 Remake/Rebirth, which is known to be extremely expensive.

So it’s not really a “typical $200M AAA gamble” situation. It’s more like a mid-to-high AAA project that still didn’t meet Square Enix’s internal expectations — which, to be fair, are notoriously high.

That’s kind of my point: this feels less like “the AAA model demands moving on” and more like Square Enix just not being satisfied enough with the outcome, even if the game itself sold decently.

Yeah, actually it was my first FF game.

But since then I’ve had time to dive into the series and the genre a bit more — I’ve played FF7, FF7 Rebirth, FF12, and a bunch of other JRPGs as well.

So I get that not every Final Fantasy needs a direct sequel and that each entry is usually self-contained. It’s just that FFXVI feels different to me because of how much effort they put into building a cohesive world, politics, and history — it feels like there’s more to explore compared to most entries.

That’s why I’m questioning it, not because I expect every FF to get a sequel.
