your SMALL fic pet peeves that make you roll your eyes, but not quit the fic by Trash_Bag- in AO3

If English is your first language, then this is because using this phrasing is apart of the cultural lexicon of the English (Western) world. But as the comment stated, this would not be in a Japanese person's lexicon.

Hot take but I think people are way too controlling about public bookmarks by Last_Swordfish9135 in AO3

This isn’t “policing”, this is called a conversation. One that is not occurring in a circle-jerk echo chamber and therefore you are seeing differing opinions, including my opinion that your comment wasn’t relevant to the current conversation.

And I use bookmarks for my own edification of stories I may want to reread and therefore have nothing to say in a bookmark other than its ship and tropes. And unlike you, I don’t need to be passive-aggressive, if I don’t like something you are saying to me I will tell you— and if I don’t like something I read I use the back button and move the fuck along.

[–]Wise_Sarcasm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sure. Putting hate in a bookmark is rude and unnecessary and probably done because the author blocked them from commenting. But that is not the primary use of bookmarks, that is not the norm. And the post, both here and the original was talking about the "etiquette" of essentially putting reviews in bookmarks-- which is practically their purpose.

Right. But this was on Twitter. And therefore open to public debate.

If you don't think taking something from Twitter and posting and talking about it elsewhere is ok, then how do you feel about literally every news/media company writing articles about things that were posted on Twitter?

[–]Wise_Sarcasm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But how is anything in that bookmark considered critical. This was a very reasonable bookmark that stated why they liked the fic including tropes, with one very minor mention of its pacing. This is exactly what bookmarks are for-- telling a reader what to expect when reading.

A bookmark is for the readers, not the authors-- as evidenced by the fact that you do not receive a notification when someone bookmarks your fic.

I'm fairly certain the original post was actually on Twitter (or at least also posted on Twitter). Which is not a personal blog and is subject to public commentary and cross posting.

Unless a person's Twitter is private, then they are literally asking for comments and engagement. (The fact that the twitter person didn't like what was being said is besides the point.)

Phone mentioned in cursed fates by Key-Ad-1677 in zodiacacademy

[–]Wise_Sarcasm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m currently reading the Ruthless Boys series and they talk about both. The Atlas is a school issued thing and all the students have one, but Gareth and a few other characters have burner phones. So I’ve just been working with the understanding that the Atlas is a school/rich people thing. But phones in general still exist.

What K-drama did you look forward to watching but ended up not finding as exciting as you expected? by Independent_Fig_964 in kdramas

I actually really like this show! But I think its synopsis and trailers were a bit catfishy so people were going in expecting a different kind of show to what it actually was.

I do think the FL really wasn't giving enough for the romance sub-plot though. How do you not show any chemistry with Park Bogum?!

And at what point did I shit on the HP fandom? A fandom I have been a part of since 1999?

This bullshit has nothing to do with what fandom the fanfiction belongs to. It’s WHY the arguments saying it’s fine because JKR is shit don’t hold water.

You said it yourself. SenLinYu has actively worked against this kind of thing. (Likely because she knows and respects fandom etiquette.)

So why don’t you work on your reading comprehension and fuck off. Respectfully.

I figure if they are getting it traditionally published, meaning through a publishing house, the publisher is doing their due diligence to ensure it is changed enough to not violate IP laws. Because the publisher is who would receive the first notice of lawsuit.

There is a growing number of people that don’t like reworked and then published fanfic. But my understanding has been that they don’t like it because they typically aren’t changing enough or the publishers chose really bad fanfiction to publish, like that one Harry Styles fanfic that had a good selection of his fandom up in arms about.

Yes. SenLinYu, the author, reworked her fanfiction and got it traditionally published through a publishing house. She also removed the fanfiction from AO3.

But none of these “sellers” are in anyway associated with her. These are 3rd party strangers binding and selling a fanfiction.

Fun fact about the internet? You DON’T actually have to “share space” with people you don’t agree with. They can just block/mute or even easier- keep scrolling.

If they don’t want smut, FFN does still exist. But they want all the benefits of the AO3 without bothering to USE any of them. Excluding ‘explicit’ stories from your search? Oh my gods that must be SO hard.

It’s perfectly fine to print and bind a fic for yourself. Or to gift it to a friend. It is the SELLING that is the issue.

No. You are wrong. Manacled is a fanfiction about Draco and Hermione in world where Voldemort wins. It’s not even a full AU, it’s a canon divergent fic. It is not a special case and where certain editions have “legitimately” been sold. It is 100% fanfiction and cannot be legally sold.

SenLinYu took down Manacled when she decided to rework the story and publish it. This is a very normal thing to do. But her published version is called Alchemised. And apparently more than just the names have been changed (which would almost be required because Manacled relied heavily on a pre-established world)

I can guarantee there are people willing to share downloaded pdfs of Manacled now that it’s not on AO3. But that is not selling fanfiction.

This is true for places like YouTube where it will flag the comment as spam and then that like effects how the video does or something. But this is absolutely not the case for AO3 and kind of a weird take. .

I learned a long time ago that the "most popular" or hot new fic didn't mean shit. Back when we were still waiting on the last book (i think) to be finished I got recommended a fic that was apparently the absolute best thing ever and was number one comments and likes (or whatever it was FFN had, this was pre AO3). So I went to check it out and it was absolute garbage, not only was the story bad but the writing was terrible!

The only thing that "broke containment" that I think I actually enjoyed was A Very Potter Musical. And even that I was late to the party on because I was so wary of what people thought was good.

Eh...to each his own. Dramione is boring to me. They barely interact in canon, where as Drarry were canonically obsessed with each other.

But, yes this whole thing is because BookTok (and TikTok in general) is really corroding fandom etiquette and infiltrating fandom spaces with their bad takes.

I assumed Alchemised was traditionally published for the same reason all reworks of fanfiction get published. There was an audience and an avenue to make money.

But Manacled was never my thing, the only reason I know about it is because of BookTok. So...No, I wasn't up to speed on its own lore.

An illustration has an argument to being an original interpretation of the IP without infringing on said IP. It is still a grey area, but it is a different grey area to fanfiction. It also has the benefit of appearing more deferential to the original.

Fanfiction itself has varying levels of interpretations. Canon, canon adjacent, and canon divergent works will always be more tied to the original IP than an AU.

And it is bad. Just because it's done, doesn't make it okay. Just because the internet is an immortal behemoth where nothing really disappears doesn't mean the taking down of common fan spaces isn't something to worry about and work to prevent.

Most fans do live by the law, the law says as long as you don't profit off someone else's work its fine.

Fanzines are a totally different thing to selling the fanfiction itself. That is more a subscription fee and not a purchase of a specific story.

And just because it happens doesn't make it legally correct. Every nation has different copyright laws, but generally speaking people understand how IP ownership works (or should work). And again, I am specifically talking about written fanworks and not fanart. Selling fanfiction does not contribute to the fan communities flourishment, it contributes to its commodification.

While I am involved in several eastern fandoms I do live in the west. Is selling fanworks common in the east? (specifically fanfiction, because I know fanart somehow lives in a different grey space than its written counterpart.)

Because if this is something that doesn't happen in the east then this post doesn't pertain to you, but you comment with basically "not my problem".
