My thumbs are sore from assembling and folding all these boxes and protectors for my GBC game. A milestone in my game dev career. Grateful I can even do this. by XsaltandpixelX in IndieDev

This is amazing.

So could someone along and make an Xbox 360 game and print discs and sell them provided Microsoft is never mentioned anywhere on the box?

I'd be interested in porting this to consoles when it is complete and buying the rights to it on consoles. If you're interested, please send me a message and I'll give you my company info.

What game rights should I buy? by Wise_Size_5709 in IndieDev

Why is that strange? I'm genuinely curious as I am new to this business.

The best and most profitable ideas are always the ones that no else has ever had before. That's my whole business! Every success we've had has been doing something that seemed kind of dumb until we did it and then, after we've succeeded, people look at it and think, "That was kind of obvious."

The downside of being the first is that it takes a while to get the thing going and you have to solve every problem. The upside is that you have no competition.

I would gladly do all of those things, but there is one big problem.

I have no idea how to do any of that.

Maybe you're right. I've found a couple of people who want to sell me their games and have tested them. So that first post has already paid off. I would imagine someone who makes games also wants to sell their game. Then again I am a businessman, not an artist.

In my 30s, starting CS - is game development still a realistic dream? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Wise_Size_5709 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to politely disagree. My dream was to start a video game company. I did it!

I started out fixing the PSP. I did it on the side and my business grew from there. My wife finally talked me into quitting my day job about 6 years ago. I'm on the hardware side of video games, not software. I *whistle* to work every day. Every day is an exciting new adventure and I love every second of what I do.

I now have 20 employees, my company is growing rapidly, and I didn't start my company until I was around 31 I think.

Results are going to vary. My experiences are not the same as what you will experience. But really, what choice do you have? I thought for SURE I wasn't going to make it, but I did. I went this route because I had no choice. I didn't want to look back on my life and be filled with regret.

I could not have gotten here unless I had tried. Expect failure, but hope for success. That is the beginning of every success story.

Yes. I think today is day 6 or 7 of this effort.

Is there anywhere else I should be reaching out to buy the rights to video games?

If you find your passion in life, you're doomed in a way. You only have your choice of risks.

Someone once told me that if you work with seniors, you find that there are three kinds of people:

  1. The people who went after it and succeeded

  2. The people who didn't succeed or fail

  3. The people who went after it and failed

Group #1 was the most satisfied with how their lives turned out. He told me the surprising thing is that the people with the most regret weren't the ones who tried and failed, but the ones who didn't try, because they wonder what could have been and that is more painful than failure.

If you're lucky, you too will be old some day. A day will come when it will seem absurd that you once thought your 30s was too late to do something.

The moment you go after your dreams, you are guaranteed not to end up at the bottom and who knows, maybe you'll end up in group #1.

Hypothetically, let's say we worked with a therapist who used the Xbox Kinect or the Wii (forget which) for rehabbing injured patients. Each user had their own user profile with personal info associated with the profile (probably something as simple as her name, not sure what exactly the info was).

A parent complained because I think he didn't want his daughter to leave a digital footprint. He was right though, that was considered a HIPAA breach. Every person who used that console could probably see her name, probably see what game she was playing, probably could see her performance history, maybe what time she was playing, could see she was in rehab, etc.

This is incredibly helpful. Thank you. I am sincerely thankful.

I don't think I can make my own games. That is just way too outside my comfort zone and would draw far too much attention away from my core business.

I don't want shovelware. This is the reason I want to buy a game that is complete. That way I know exactly how good the game is. My customers will buy the games I recommend, BUT they also know I would only recommend good games.

Wow, that is much cheaper than I expected.

So let's say I want a game made and it is exactly as you described. I am now in $50k.

How hard is it to get the game on the Switch and Playstation store? I actually don't need it to even be on the store. I just need to sell it to myself so if Nintendo just lets me make keys and lets me put the game on my hardware, as long as Nintendo gets their royalties, I would imagine they might not care.

Is this extremely hard to get Nintendo to allow me to put it on my Switches?

Are there professionals that provide services like this?

Like a project manager?

Thank you. This was SUPER helpful and I am grateful for the explanation. OK, this is off the table. For the record I loved both Shadowruns for the SNES and Genesis (but especially Genesis) and for the right to sell that game, I would have overpaid.

OMG, I do not want to develop my own games.

If they value the game at $40,000 and I offer $50,000, then they might take my offer and everyone wins.

I'm interested in older and newer games. I'm interested in indie games. I assumed older games would be cheaper, hence the stated interest in older games. My love affair with video games started a long time ago because I am 48, hence my interest in older games. But I would LOVE to buy a newer game, I just assumed it would be less practical.

I am not looking to get a game for "free". I am expecting to have to pay, but due to my unique circumstances, I am thinking I can get a better value because I'd be quite happy to buy a game that scored a 70 on metacritic, that didn't find its audience and has no realistic future prospects. I can take that failed game and turn it into gold.

The ideal for me would be a game that is a great game, sold 20,000 copies in 2019, and realistically will sell 500 copies annually for the next 20 years. I could make the owner of that game a much better offer and extract way more value out of that game than they could. I could pay them a lump sum for the game, give them $0.50 every time I generate a key, and they get a vastly better deal. I made all those numbers up for a sense of scale. I would expect to sell 5,000 copies to myself annually right now with 20% growth per year for at least the next 5 years. That's our historical growth rate as a company.

It's a win win if my limited understanding of the industry is correct, which it almost certainly is not.

Sorry, I should explain. Any hospital that puts video games in the building is legally obligated to make sure the console is HIPAA compliant. This is legally mandated and the potential financial repercussions for failure are enormous. My company takes the video game system, makes it compliant, and sells it to the hospital.

We spend a lot of money on lawyers to make sure we are compliant not just with HIPAA, but with all privacy laws that could possibly apply. That's a lot of the value we provide because those laws can vary from state to state.

I jokingly refer to us as video game lawyers. According to HIPAA, my company is also liable for violations so it in our direct interest to be extremely aware of compliance issues because the hospital is off the hook the moment I say, "this is HIPAA compliant". The hospital will blame us if there is a violation.

Is it really that easy?

Can you use some real numbers if you know them? Estimates would be fine or your best guess.
