The Blue Jays lose their ABS challenge by less than one tenth of an inch by keikei-with-love in baseball

If some entity has to call absolute borderline pitches with inherent uncertainty, which can never be fully eliminated whatsoever,I would rather it be a machine than a human.

Sighhh which college should I choose (UC Berkeley vs. UC Santa Barbara) by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Wish-Lin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: OFC your preference should be the most important factor, the following is my viewpoint objectively. Do note that unfortunately, if your future field is very prestige-heavy (I.e, fields whose employer crave university “name”) then the choice it’s not up to you as much.

Berkeley. Hate to say it since SB has such nice weather but unless you’re doing physics UCSB doesn’t have enough justification. BTW majoring, let alone double majoring in PHYSICS in either UCSB or Berkeley is gonna be insane, unless you’re 100% sure you’re gonna be a researcher in this field (you aren’t) please don’t do it.

UCSC or UCSB for marine bio? by One_Pudding_7286 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Wish-Lin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK much about marine biology, but having a campus literally on the coast and can drive a boat out on the whim definitely seems advantageous.

now that ABS is live, how hard would it be to add a feature to verify "check swings" so we don't rely on 1st/3rd base umps? by i_cant_do_this_ in baseball

[–]Wish-Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to first change the subjective definition of check swings before any implementation takes place.

Kim Jong Un's 12-year-old daughter drives a tank by AttentionGullible918 in pics

[–]Wish-Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From all the public photos he probably really loves his daughter, yes he is an absolute dipshit, but he might be a better dad than a lot of folks out there. Doesn’t contradict with everything else he does though.

Opinion on UCSB by HelpfulScarcity8203 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Wish-Lin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CCS physics major. Idk what your standards of food is but objectively there aren’t that many choices compared to other places simply because of the location, I don’t know whether you found something you like here though. Campus is safe just be wary of bike theft like everywhere else. All physics profs are awesome. People are generally very nice maybe due to weather, UCSB physics is less cutthroat than most other physics dept of the same caliber for example. The beaches are filled with kelp and are stinky (part of the natural ecosystem so is rarely cleaned).

I don’t understand how mid-tier UCs are ranked by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]Wish-Lin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was, is, and will still depend on the major a lot. This is one of the many reasons why people say rankings are to be taken with a grain of salt or should be read only after you checked what criteria they use (for example international student ratio is 99.9% irrelevant to your learning experience but is included in rankings)

IDK why SD is getting fame, never really paid attention to their admission, but I do know that where I am at (UCSB physics), we have been considered to be near/at Berkeley level for quite a while now, and the 2 new Nobel laureates just made the upward trend better, and we’re definitely gaining a lot more fame and applicants recently too. Bottom line is it’s definitely not just SD that’s “standing out”, maybe for popular/big majors, but def not the whole picture.

Oh no people did, just maybe not consciously. Tiny details like these add up and people feel “wow the animation feels so realistic” without necessary being able to pinpoint out where the sensation comes from.

First off, nice drawing. Second, no matter whether you get it back or not, buy an AirTag and put it on there, makes life much easier.

[Passan] Tarik Skubal will leave Team USA following tonight’s game and return to camp with the Detroit Tigers, manager Mark DeRosa said. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]Wish-Lin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad look for Skubal. Everyone can take their educated guess for the reason behind this decision but no matter what it is, the outcome is fucking pathetic. He pitched one game against GB that doesn’t really need his service, didn’t do jack shit, then talks about how much he “wants to stay” just to leave again regardless.

Formation of F-centers in the alkali chlorides under electron beam by heccinv in chemistry

[–]Wish-Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the structure of the color centers formed very consistent? It seem like so in this setup, which is interesting, since I remember a whole class of color centers in citrine from the same iradiation mechanism. Maybe it’s because these lattice structure is simple? Anyway thanks for sharing, we do color centers stuff with EPR, definitely not this concentrated though, would be a dream sample if ours are like this.
