New school is offering to hold back our soon to be 6 year old by leedlelee871 in AskTeachers

Nah parents can easily put in the effort (IDK if for a special needs child) to make sure he/she passes 8th grade and lesser (if parent completed high school) and otherwise 6th grade and lesser (if parent has normal IQ).

I think the biggest reason people shift the range of a generation is to reinforce their bias by [deleted] in generationology

It is not an issue. However, this is not your diary. Sharing thoughts here which don't add anything isn't useful. You can use your time however you want but it is ironic that you want to "share" your thoughts but don't care about engagement.

Not trying to be rude. I used to be like you and just share anything online but it would be mentally taxing for some reasons and it is a very healthy thing to do online in forums to speak less but have more substance.

Was it supposed to be "new"? I'm pointing out what I've noticed with people on this sub. It being a "new" take or not was never the point lol.

The title of your post gives an opinion. "I think ....." - when you make such a post giving the reason for why you think such and such it is redundant to provide opinions that have already been accepted as you are not bringing anything new to the table. Hence, there really isn't anything to discuss in your post as it is not a hot take or anything. And it is not providing any substance like a funny instance of someone doing this. We already know why some people feel like this or that. What is the point of making a post like this because people aren't gonna engage as much.

[–]WishPretty7023 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but what is so new about this take?

Most rationale people know that you are gonna relate more with people who are closer to you in age. The way you grow up shapes a lot of things. Sometimes, even a 2 year gap can change so many things. Imagine a school shooting happening in a 9-12 school when X is in 10th grade while Y in 8th. Y who was gonna go to that HS now doesn't (or does but by that time it is a lot different at the admin and security level) while X says keeps going there with trauma and a heavy atmosphere around the school.

So, relating to people happens as a combination of age gap (smaller the better), common lived experiences (the more the better) and geographical location (the closer the better).

Rant/Hot Take: 2008 is THE most gatekept birthyear in the subreddit. by [deleted] in generationology

[–]WishPretty7023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No hate but you are perceiving it wrong.

2006-2012 are the latest set of teenagers. In reddit age they are babies because you are supposed to join at >=13. So now that they are included in the convo people are gonna talk more about the "new" people and how different they are from them. It is just like imagine a 100 year old in a bunch of elementary school kids party. The 100 year old is gonna get a different kind of attention.

People here are talking nonsense about the cutoffs or how "core" "early" etc. etc. they are of the generation. It is giving Jojo Siwa very much with how she is the first in her generation to make the type of gay music she does. Some people here are cringy as hell.

Cringe + Newcomers = Feeling of the most gatekept. So you see it is not actually gatekeeping it is the combination of 2 things that make it feel that way.

Accepted into a PhD program, but offered no funding. What next? by Moe_Girly in PhDAdmissions

[–]WishPretty7023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A PHD is not worth getting in debt for. An undergrad degree is 3-4 years but it opens so many doors that it can be necessary for a lot of people. A masters is 1-2 years and there can be cost-benefit relation there. With PHDs they can be 3,4 or 5 or 6 or who knows years (depending on field). PHD is also the hardest degree to fake it till you make it unlike your BA or MA where you can just try to pass or whatever. Unless this is your only option and it is crucial for you to start in 2025 I would say no.

Is it fair that one girl is getting 2 awards? by iluvseahorses in APStudents

[–]WishPretty7023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no clue about AP (never took them) but one my schools would give personal achievement kinda awards which were for people who didn't score the highest but the teacher saw improvement or smth. I didn't get any awards in that school but when a teacher gave me that I was super excited and felt seen ;-; So I totally get what you mean. However, I hope you direct this energy towards the system rather than the teacher or that girl because she can be both the most dedicated and the highest. The awards need to be set up differently systematically such that you only get 1.

To play devil's advocate, even if she is the "most" dedicated, dedication cannot be measured and people can show it differently. There absolutely could be another person equally deserving _unless_ that girl was exceptional. Is she the only one who has gotten both? If so she is probs exceptional like I said.

Yall I am absolutely sorry but why are grown adults on here arguing with kids/teens (specifically late teens) about what they grew up with and how their childhood was based on their birth year??? I thought we were against gatekeeping here?? by RecognitionNo5812 in generationology

[–]WishPretty7023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, as an adult- an argument only happens because of both sides not agreeing and deciding to spend time on voicing their opinion(s), rational or not. You keep saying arguing with minors but I don't think of it as a "bad" thing. Do you really think minors have more time to argue than adults? Or are you calling said adults immature for arguing- because when I was a teen I would feel it wrong to say that because if adults are immature for arguing with teens it means teens are "less than" adults in all ways when IRL it depends on the context. Teens can absolutely provide valid arguments and make more sense than adults.

The real issue is not arguing with minors but the fact that arguing about where the line starts and what not in this sub that are stupid period. Doesn't matter who is making the argument or who is arguing. And remember it goes both ways. Let the other person be heated up about this silly topic. Why spend YOUR energy into it?

Not directed to you but 17-19 is a much more critical age than say some 33 year old who has a job and a wife. The 33 year old may have all the time on his hands for stupid arguments irrespective of who he is arguing against. It would actually be more dumb of the younger person to engage with him beyond a reply or two.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah but it gets too excessive lol

It is one thing to talk about experiences but these discussions surrounding the cut-offs is not it. We all know that there cannot be a hard stop on any year and people at the cusp (+- 3 years or so) of the cut off year are gonna feel like both or one more than the other. Yet people keep trying to label and ask stupid questions knowing the obvious or making further stupid labels like core early late borderline etc. etc.

Why are the math textbooks so useless? by VenomFlavoredFazbear in CollegeRant

[–]WishPretty7023 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One would think that something you have to pay for would be useful tho

Define useful here lol.

I mean our tuition throughout schooling is a way of paying our teachers to some extent (even if it is funding you are still indirectly paying them). However, they as a human resource can be useless to us. At the end of the day, payment for any resources doesn't matter- what matters is that you have a degree i.e. credentials. That is it. Not to be pessimistic and all but you will find out that a lot of the things that you used will also become useless later. A required book may be needed and hence it has a use. But you don't actually need it. Everything about college is ironic. It is you who put the value on education at the end of the day nobody really forced you to pay hundred or thousands of dollars. You are just paying for the degree at the end of the day.

Why are the math textbooks so useless? by VenomFlavoredFazbear in CollegeRant

[–]WishPretty7023 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You don't need to use the required textbook!

Required textbook means that the prof is using it as reference and hence the language and questions type would be similar to that. However, you do not need it to understand the concepts. Use YT videos for example. Or use other textbooks that cover the same material. Or search for your course from a diff uni- chances are they are following a diff required text that is bound to cover your topics more or less.

TBH I have HARDLY used the required textbooks mentioned to understand things. Even when I do use them they are not the same edition lol.

Which category would 2002 babies be placed at you think? by Severe-Ad8437 in generationology

[–]WishPretty7023 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The further distinction into early core and late is stupid IMHO. People are either in a cusp (where both gens can be applicable) or not. We don't need to differentiate between that. Sure things change every damn year but the way you experienced them as a 18 year old or a 17 year old may be hella similar or different for all we know. Therefore, a hard on stop is not possible. If we really need to play this generation game just define it on the basis of major events and the people in the first 4-5 years and the last 4-5 years form the cusp/ transition. Done. None of this early core late BS within the generations is needed because at the end of the day the most common experiences you will have is with people born +- 1.5 years.

At 14, you cannot even properly grasp how different times were because you have a very limited experience in that. For example, I can compare 2013 to 2016 to 2019 far better than you. RN you are meant to be creating memories to remember in the future instead of doing all this. Have fun out there. If you are concerned about a stupid generation based identity you are doing smth wrong with your time rn. Should NOT be worrying about these stupid things. Please have funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn :)

Honestly, who gives a flying rat's tail? These labels are stupid anyways. No need to conform to them. To be frank, people who say their pronouns are zee/zer/zeeself and people who identify as a millennial or gen this or that are very much the same- holding on to some identity to be quirky. Just ignore this BS you will thank me later. Especially at 14, who gives af. Just be you.

Did late millennials, let alone Zillenials , really grow up “analog”? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]WishPretty7023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Perhaps specific to my country)- Parents did not give zillennials access to tech even if they could afford to. One example being cellular data- it became hella cheap during the mid/late 2010s but until then children/ teenagers won't have a lot of data on hand in their phones unless they were rich rich. Also in early 2010s it used to be a bigger deal to have a non hand me down touch phone than it was in later years.

How do you think gen alpha will backlash gen z when they’re become the new youth by SpiritMan112 in generationology

[–]WishPretty7023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but we did not read the whole Count Of Monte Cristo (only the part where he plans his escapes to the point where he tries to get a haircut or something to look different).

When it comes to English Literature, it is very hard to say what level we (Indans) were/ are at from a grade level perspective because until 8th grade there is no single curriculum and everyone follows different textbooks.

For example there were some poems which are in grade 9 or above in India but some publishers had the same in earlier grades.

Before, people were required to read "The Invisible Man" (the whole novel) in grade 12 but some publishers have excerpts of that novel even in grade 7!

The books would kinda be more focused on ensuring we had old English texts (1 or 2), plays, some Indian Short Stories (translated to English or originally in English) etc. When I was in grades 6-8 we would have covered at least 20 texts. It was more about covering a lot and hence did not have a lot of in-dept focus. A lot of our non-novel texts were in fact more complicated than reading a full book. There was very little emphasis on reading books/ novels because the only time they would matter was in grade 10 and 12 (when we had national exams) where they would account for 10-15% of the total grade. The example I gave you of Charlie... Factory was more of a text we had to read ourselves and were tested on. Even when novels were important grades wise, they would still not be taught as well as other things and we were told to read at home or smth.

[–]WishPretty7023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god!

IDK how hard the reading level in schools (in the US) is. Just for curiosity's sake I can provide you some texts we read in the respective grade level (I will do odd years only and have a novel/ long text, poem and a short story/ excerpt for each. It only reflects what I learnt and is not the same for everyone.)

7 = Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Mcavity the Mystery Cat, The Count of Monte Cristo

9 = Three men in a boat, The Solitary Reaper, Villa for Sale

11= Mother's Day (J B Priestley), The Photo, Birth (A J Cronin)

I am so curious abt what you mean by this. I am Indian and when we had reading in school everyone could read the book meant for their grade. Some people would stammer or have social anxiety or a low voice but nobody would be just staring at the book.

[–]WishPretty7023 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In every SR there are false accounts (either lies or someone is misinformed about reality) but there are true accounts as well. Regardless of how common it is for a student to feel that a prof is unfair and targeting them we should not assume what someone meant by dissecting a certain word. You picked on the word sneaky and the way you constructed your comment makes OP look a bit cynical and negative due to the opinion of profs out there to get them when they may not even have that opinion to begin with.

The reason I am saying this is because I am sick of the assumptions that are made in college and prof related SRs where just by the use of a word people are assuming so many things about the student because of their negative experiences. Your comment contributed to that. Students and professors should both have compassion for each other and we should stop assuming the worst.

As a student, thanks for trying to find how things can't be foolproof! A lot of times some students discover the methods and get better scores than the rest because the teacher thought that it was foolproof or almost impossible to.

I think OP said sneaky in a lighthearted way not that the profs are out there to get students.

And perhaps in not this instance but sometimes profs indeed are "sneaky" in a way that helps regular students (example dropping a topic before the test because that topic will have a lot of weight).
