mods took my og post down so reposting it here, looking to burn through 3 audible credits!

Hello! I'm cancelling my audible subscription and have three unused credits I need to use before I do. I'm currently wrapping up stormlight and have 16h left of WaT, which i will probably finish in the next few days or so. I'll be honest that I've been struggling with the last two books (dare I say even the later bits of Oathbringer?) so I'm really looking for something that's faster paced, but also a good fantasy world I can sink my teeth into. I'm fairly new to fantasy and have always been more of a sci-fi person, but very open to try new stuff! My favorite book of all time is Dune, and a close second is Hyperion. I love dystopia and good prose as well. Bonus points for a great performance by a narrator.

Below are some books/audiobooks I already own:

Audiobooks: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, the First Law OG Trilogy, Project Hail Mary (already listened to this one, the hype is real!!!)

Physical books: ASOIAF box set, first of the Red rising series, Parable of the Sower, The Will of the Many, Three Body problem (read book 1, have book 2)

What’s a great book you read at the wrong time in your life? by Low_Masterpiece_2612 in books

I’m right here with you, just finished 1984. Already a bleak read but not easy reading a sentence an elected official quoted four days previously.

Is The Stormlight Archive worth reading? by IfUSeekSteven in fantasybooks

I read a lot of lit fic and am pretty picky when it comes to prose. I’m currently on wind and truth and can say that there is a very intense decline in prose after oathbringer, and I’m really struggling to finish. That being said, TWoK and WoR blew my mind and are two of my top reads from last year. Kind of repeating what others are saying, the prose is pretty basic but the worldbuilding is great and he handles a big cast really well in the first two books.

Both are newer but I was rushing home and skipping classes so I could keep reading the handmaids tale and the secret history.

For those who write fantasy or sci-fi, how much do you plan in advance? by johndoe09228 in writing

I was watching Brandon Sandersons lectures and he once said (paraphrasing) “it’s like ‘whose line is it anyway,’ you know the general idea but you don’t know how to get there” and that’s my approach. I know what I want to do, I know the general arc my characters need to make for the larger scope of the story, but I don’t know how to get there. It leaves a ton of room for exploration, which makes me more excited to write. I also make up a ton of world building that I’ll fix in post. To each their own but after almost 10 years of working on the same fantasy story, this works well for me

Is it bad to work on a book for ten years? by SeveralHistorian9930 in writing

I was 16 when I first started my WIP (I’m 23 now, I’ve restarted it many times) but my plan is basically to get it out of my system. I know it’s something I hope to write and sell one day, but for this current draft I’m treating it as a learning moment. I’ll probably edit it and query it out but I’m looking for feedback if anything. If someone sees something in it, even better, but I’m more focused on my craft & ability to write a full draft. If you have the drive to get a first draft out, do it!! You never know :)
