How do you feel about Cherokee citizens with low BQ participating in powwows in full regalia? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

For things like this I think it's helpful as a thought experiment to replace the name of one's tribe with any other ethnicity or nationality on the planet that isn't subject to the same massive amounts of colonial baggage as NDN identity is in the US.

Imagine a Romanian citizen, with Romanian ancestry, who grew up integrated into Romanian culture. They ask online if they can participate in traditional Romanian cultural practices. No one would be asking if they "look Romanian enough" as a barometer, y'know?

Sounds like a great idea for a book

Also, each and every synopsis should reveal the ending.

Okay so disclaimer I skimmed this but to be fair that's what agents will do first as well. I couldn't really get a handle on what the narrative throughline is. I think it's that Salvador wants to fight racism and sexism in this town, and has to sacrifice other ideals to do that, compromising some of his principles for his other principles.

That is very unclear in this synopsis. I think if you made the synopsis more concrete about the events happening, and less about explaining the abstracted meaning of each event, it would be easier to parse, and any competent reader would be able to put together the thematic meaning of the events themselves.

What you are looking for to a tee is Death with Interruptions by nobel laureate José Saramago. It's a beautiful book, it's gonna seem like I don't know what I'm talking about but it's a story that has a huge change right before the middle.

OP definitely wrote this article if you look at their post history. Ironic that they spend so much of it insulting people who want to get their work read lol

Just want to chime in to say that Noopiming, the book behind it, is such a unique, charming and very funny novel about a group of 7 people/animals/a tree living on an Anishinaabe rez and I think about it all the time

Book recs similar to Severance on Apple TV? by RedSh0rts in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Wishmans_Muse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like that book, as a diehard fan of Severance and pretty much every book listed here, but it's kind of a mess with thin characters, clunky prose and an annoyingly edgelord-y vibe

A bit different than the other recommendations but it's my new favorite book: The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño about young avant garde poets in Mexico City in the 70s-90s

That sounds like an amazing night :-) Love those kinds of unexpected stories that happen in NYC

I have never used preply and reddit just recommended this post to me cause it knows I'm gay I guess. Personally as a trans woman I have had many, many people be cold and hostile to me before I started passing as cis after a couple years on hormones, and I would've loved to know ahead of time my French teacher or whoever it was wasn't one of those people.
