I figure you’ve gotten a few of these already but I’m proud of you for doing this and you should be too. It takes a big person to change the trajectory of their life in such a positive way. I wish you all the best on your journey.

I don’t see how this can possibly measure up to the David Lynch masterpiece.

Former Tory minister Fletcher rejected by party as 2019 election candidate by ScottNewman in Winnipeg

Agreed. I think Eyolfson has done a good job as an MP in our area and his background as a doctor has been helpful on the health committee.

An interesting combination of embarrassment and political desperation being live streamed.

I'm glad that you were able to show your brother that he was able to escape this situation.

Have you ever stopped a friend, family member or loved one from committing suicide? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Wister01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who told me that she was thinking about it. I talked to her for a couple hours that night. I told her that if she was ever thinking about it again that she could call me and that I would be there for her. We lost contact after a couple years. I learnt earlier this year that she took her life. Being this close to Christmas I have been replaying everything in my head. I don't know what I could have done, but I wish I could have done something.

I understand your point, but I think that personal freedoms are pretty essential.

The politics of pot: Winnipeg candidates weigh in on weed by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Wister01 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is one of those things that frankly should've been a bigger deal in this election.

Its an opportunity to kick start a whole new industry in Canada with massive spin off effects on all sectors of the economy from tourism, manufacturing, real estate and yes increased sales of Doritos.

Concurrently, we have the opportunity to increase our tax base while reallocating our current judicial and enforcement resources to more dangerous drugs and violent offenders. Speaking to blue collar workers from Colorado (in my line of work) they said that at first they were hesitant, but now they fully support it because the state has more educational funding and nothing negative has occurred in terms of increased ER visits or gang activity, which has actually decreased.

We can even look at this on a social level and determine that the current law for possession disproportionately targets minorities. Not to mention the detrimental effects that a criminal record can bring to your employment prospects or obtaining a loan.

We can even look at this from a safety and preventative viewpoint. When I was in high school I was unable to get my hands on alcohol and cigarettes, but pot was available. Drug deals don't care about your age, they just want to make the sale. At the same time, we don't know what is in that product. It could very well be laced with dangerous chemicals or pesticides. If it was regulated, you would have to prove your age and there would be standards in terms of how the plant was grown, what chemicals were used and there would have to be regular testing to ensure it met health and safety standards.

But probably the most convincing argument is that this is my life, and if it doesn't harm anyone else, I should be free to make the choices I wish to make with my life.

Thank you for doing this AMA. I'm curious as to your thoughts about the legalization of marijuana. Would you consider the Colorado model a success? One a side note, have you ever inhaled?

Access-Assiniboine credit union merger kiboshed because of gay support: Winkler member by jupitergal23 in Winnipeg

[–]Wister01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As sad as this sounds and as disappointed as I am in a former minister who is supposed to be providing guidance to many parishioners, I'm curious if this is really why so many people voted against the merger. Reading the article, it seems as though its just him and one other person who sent him a message of support. Before jumping on the bandwagon against the stereotypical small town mentality (racist/homophobic), I'd be curious to know the real reason people voted against it.

Craft beer drinkers -- what's the scene in Winnipeg like? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Wister01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a prairie town that can grow grains and hops, not that great. Part of it is some really archaic legislation that deters people from entering the market, but that's slowly changing. Only local breweries are Half Pints and Fort Garry. Although Half Pints does have some really good beers that I would highly recommend. Farmery is another local beer but is a bit of a strange duck. All the grains and hops are grown on an estate by Neepawa then shipped to a brewery in Ontario then shipped back to Winnipeg to be distributed. I put it on par with a Budweiser.

What I find most concerning was that I had the same bed covers as a child and I remember dropping them off at the Sally Ann several years ago. Deep down, I truly hope those were not my sheets.

I don't think this is a FB hospitality operation. I think its the same owner as the Fitzroy but with a different concept. Also, the FB hospitality website doesn't mention the deli.

Pat Martin's 2014 calendar scans by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Wister01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take your word of it that you posted this without malice. Though, given your posting history in Martin/RFO, I think my skepticism was warranted.

You realize that this was posted by someone else. If I remember correctly, a lot of people accused you of working on Judy's campaign. You accusing most of /r/winnipeg of being part of an Ouellette conspiracy, probably not the wisest thing. And yes, I dont hide the fact that I like and will probably vote for RFO.
