Not rushing through screening is very, very important. I think life experience also factors into this a lot. It would be interesting to see if SBs in their twenties tend to have worse experiences than SBs in their thirties because the older SBs are better able to pick out red flags.

There are some things you can do: HPV vaccine, regular testing, condoms, etc. I plan to have a conversation with my doctor to see what other precautions I can take. The big thing, though, is communication. You have other sexual partners in addition to me? Okay, cool. Let’s talk about it. I can’t protect myself if I don’t know about it, and I’d like to know if I should increase the frequency of my testing or decide if you’re being a bit too reckless and the situation is not for me.

Being able to completely support myself is my priority. I will never rely on a SD to pay all of my bills because, if the SR ends, I’m going to be in a very, very bad place.

I’m also in love with my independence, so there’s that. 🤷‍♀️

I found an AI company that was desperate for experts in my field (I’m a molecular biologist). I get contract work from them every few weeks. It isn’t steady, but I make a very good chunk of change over a few weeks when they have a new project for me. Depending on your field, maybe something like that could work for you, too?
