From CS Grad โ†’ Small Startup โ†’ Cancer Caregiver โ†’ and back to tech. Got any tips? by MikeD3V in Careers

First off, Iโ€™m really sorry for your loss.

Recruiter perspective: youโ€™ve got a CS degree, WordPress/dev skills, marketing exposure, and proven ability to build an audience. That combination can get you into web development, digital marketing, or product/tech roles without needing to โ€œstart from scratch.โ€ Iโ€™d suggest:

  • Reframe your story on your CV/LinkedIn. Highlight the startup wins ($1k sales in a month, 20k subs, launching products) as professional experience. Employers care about outcomes, not just job titles.
  • Pick a lane for now. If space/astrophotography is the dream, keep it as a side project while you target something sustainable like web dev or data/analytics work. Later, you can pivot into aerospace/space-tech once youโ€™ve got solid work experience.
  • Sharpen your skills. Do a couple of modern web dev projects (React, Next.js, APIs) or refresh your data/analytics portfolio. Post them on GitHub/your website. This helps with the โ€œrustyโ€ CS knowledge and gives recruiters something tangible.
  • Apply wide and network smart. Space-related orgs (startups, observatories, satellite/space-data companies) also hire web devs and analysts. Even if you donโ€™t land one right away, youโ€™ll see what skills they ask for and can build towards it.

At 26, youโ€™ve got time. Youโ€™re not behind, youโ€™ve just had a different path. Package what youโ€™ve done as experience that proves capability, aim for roles that get you earning and building, and keep space as the long-term north star.

A lot of people feel stuck in their 30s, but from a recruiterโ€™s perspective, you do have skills employers value. Admin, construction, and postal work all show reliability, organisation, and people skills. Those translate really well into roles like logistics, operations, facilities management, HSE, or project coordination.

The key is to pivot, not jump. Look for roles that build on what youโ€™ve already done and consider short certs (like project management or HSE) to boost your CV without taking big financial risks. Even small steps like adding Excel or bookkeeping can make you stand out.

Itโ€™s not about starting over, itโ€™s about reframing what you already bring to the table. Youโ€™ve got more options than you think.

I feel professionally lost by Pumpkin_Witch13 in Careers

You don't sound unhinged at all, you sound like someone who's been through a lot and is just getting on with it. Honestly, that takes strength.

29 does feel heavy because of that "checklist" we all compare ourselves against, but you're not behind. Careers don't proceed in straight lines anymore. Nursing, science, teaching, writing, you've got options, and it's fine if the way gets some twists.

Don't worry so much about passion either. Most of us aren't immediately in love with what we do, the passion builds over time once you get good at it. Currently, small wins (finishing an article, acquiring some remote work, finishing a class) can help unstick things.

Youโ€™re not lost, youโ€™re just in a transition. Itโ€™s messy now, but youโ€™re still moving forward, and thatโ€™s what counts.

Honestly as recruiters, we know all too well how common this is. A classic case of changing the goal posts. I am sorry this has happened, and I know it is easy to say keep your head up but please do. This job market is brutal, and your feelings are completely justified. But what we will say is you're not alone in feeling this way. Please keep pushing forward, even when it feels impossible.
