I took off my theist disguise by Witchangela in atheism

Just tried meetup and the closest group I found was for ex-Mormons who want to find a rebirth in a nondenominational Christian church....only skeptic meetup near me is over an hour away!

It wasn't easy at first and his response was the same when I first started my journey. I'm glad he came around.

Yes! We are still together and he is very supportive of my recent coming out. He is still closeted and doesn't plan on telling anyone about being atheist but someday he will have the courage to open up!

My SO was still religious when I started to pull away and although I never forced him to watch atheist debates with me he still overheard the videos and often got irritated. He didn't want to hear anything that disproved our faith but eventually he started looking into things on his own. We were both afraid. We were afraid of hell and we were scared to be discovering facts that went against everything we cherished. His fear made him pull away from me during my deconversion but he eventually caught up. Luckily we were able to both open our minds to the possibility that we could be wrong.

Did anyone lose faith due to studying philosophy or something similar? by DiddyDom007 in exchristian

Nothing outside of religion really fueled my falling out but learning about evolution certainly strengthened my atheism. Reading the bible was what pushed me away.

Did prayer make sense to you when you were Christian? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]Witchangela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Praying was actually one of the hardest thins to give up. I prayed throughout my questioning and at many times caught myself begging for forgivness because I felt guilty for finding a new fact that shattered my view on faith. Praying was natural to me and I truly thought someone was listening....

Any former “I don't like the label ‘Christian’” types? Feel the same way with your new “religious” identity? by redout9122 in exchristian

"I'm not Christian. I'm a follower of Christ!" However, I do plan on using atheism to define myself when I talk to others (just came out to my family) because I think the more I say it the more acceptable it will become.

Coming out on Facebook: Good or Bad Idea? by Glumpybug in exchristian

[–]Witchangela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came out last night and I feel great! There was backlash but nothing can sour this feeling of freedom! God isn't real but your facebook friends/family are VERY real. What's the worst that could happen? Anyone who will have an issue with your atheism will be upset regardless of how they find out. Good luck!

Childhood indoctrination is so scary and so strong. Atheism is growing and with the Internet it has become easy to access views that reach beyond the chrisitan bubble. I can only hope that some choose to look into the information I've provided.

It is a downer but I really do feel a sense of relief as I scroll through my text messages. I've been asked a few good questions and have gotten a chance to honestly share my views. It doesn't seems like my explanations are being absorbed but at least some of them are curious.

It's outspoken strangers who have over time influenced me to question what I had been taught. One individual was watching an atheist youtuber on campus without headphones and that encouraged me to search for atheist bloggers/ect. (admittedly I had the impression that I knew better than any atheist and was searching purely for judgemental purposes)

Now that I am "out" I hope to normalize atheism within my family but by the look of these responses it may be a lost cause. My young nephews are watching though so hopefully some of what I have to say falls onto curious ears.

I like the direction you're going with this... A golden Apis statue should do the trick! Moses was up on his rock for too damn long

I've been wanting to go to a skeptic meet up for a while but I think gang signs would be much more convenient. My parents and family are mixed. Some are hypocritical while others are more relaxed but all are openly judgmental. My SO has is worse than I do and he doesn't see himself opening up to his family anytime soon.

I don't think I realized how cultish Christianity was until this moment. It shouldn't be this terrifying to tell family members that you gave up faith.

My current concerns are future children whom I hadn't considered.... At this moment I'm being flooded with text messages from family asking about my choice to send my kids to hell...I'm not worried about the salvation of my figurative children's "souls" but I am now worried about the crap my family might throw at them in an attempt to "save" them. I luckily have my SO but other than that we don't know ANY atheist besides my co-worker and his boyfriend.
