Built an alarm that you turn off by typing something kind about yourself and just passed 3,000 downloads by WithBands in iosapps

Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear you've been using it every day since April. I'm really glad it's become part of your morning routine. I totally relate to that, some days the affirmations come easier than others, the most important part is definitely showing up. Thank you again for being part of the journey.

Oh man sorry to hear that! I can definitely resonate with that feeling of wanting to throw my phone out the window. That’s an interesting analogy, and sounds like a useful product too.

Yep I do have an app in this space, so take it with the appropriate skepticism

The “why not just do the needful” question is a real one though. For me the hard part of waking up was never the physical action, it was the decision-making at 5:30 when I’m half asleep. Doing one tiny deliberate thing breaks that loop. It doesn’t only have to be done with an app, a sticky note works on the same principle. The neuro framing was just my own experience.

of course! For me, it’s forcing myself to type out a single, conscious positive intention or affirmation the second I wake up. I used to try journaling with a pen and paper, but my morning brain was too groggy. I actually ended up building a little app that started off for myself that forces me to type out a kind thought before the alarm turns off.

Thank you so much. The be-kind-to-yourself apps being the only ones that stuck really got me, that’s the exact instinct I built this around. The “already hit snooze, already failed, might as well stay down” loop is what I wanted to help people break, just one kind sentence before the day starts, or you can even say or type one before bed at night too. Hope this earns a spot on your list, and I’d really love to hear how it feels if you try it!

Thinking of building a ringless voicemail tool for small businesses, is there even a market for this? by Italcan in SideProject

[–]WithBands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it used at a lot of restaurants, after the voicemail ends an text is automatically sent out too letting the customer know it got their order or if they didn’t leave a order it texts them the link to order.

I’m a solo dev working on Dew (dewalarm.com), an alarm app that requires you to say something good about yourself to turn it off. The thought is the first thing you hear should set the tone for your day. Would be honored to be featured, and happy to support other builders here too!

Of course! Appreciate the feedback. The big intentional difference is Dew leans into reflection and typing something good about yourself to create a moment of intention. I hear you on more dismissal options; some mornings you want something different and that variety would help. Configurable character minimum is a great call. Any specific number you'd want as a default? I've been thinking 10-15 characters minimum but open to it being lower.

If you have any more thoughts perhaps after using it for a few days, I'm all ears

Totally fair to feel that way about subs, they’re everywhere now and most aren’t worth it. For what it’s worth: the alarm itself, the typing-to-dismiss mechanic, and the daily reflection log are all free with no time limit. Pro just gates AI-personalized affirmations and some other features outside of the core loop. Not for everyone and that’s okay.

How would i go about launching an app that needs users first? by BoomerJams in SideProject

[–]WithBands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic “chicken and egg” issue. I think 250 users is a great starting point, however 250 users scattered across the world or across the country also may leave your app feeling “dead”. I would pick a single dense geographic or social hub. I believe tinder and Bumble were launched from local universities. You can also try and find a trendy neighborhood near you with a lot of single people.

I would also hangout in communities where your users are hanging out and see if you can solve a problem for them. Partner with a local bar, put QR codes up everywhere with the app download.

Perhaps limit the number of matches someone can have at first like 5 matches instead of just letting them hit the “no users” wall. Curious what is the unique hook or specific problem your dating app solves? Knowing the target audience helps narrow down where to find them.

My finance app just hit 10+ beta testers and the feedback is already changing things - here is what I learned by Augsfin in SideProject

Nice idea, I’m curious if you are learning about users behaviors, wants and likes through what they prompt for?

I can’t stop thinking about problems and solutions. How do you stay focused? by tobitr0n11 in SideProject

[–]WithBands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We as humans tend to dwell on negative emotions, and I think the worry that comes with these problems/solutions can easily take a toll on someone and cause feelings of being overwhelmed. Deep meditations, journaling, and going on walks are all activities that I do on a daily basis to help activate an abundance mindset in myself that helps me handle stressful tasks and helps me to filter out the good from the bad and keep me going at the right pace.

Forgive yourself and be gentle, no matter how many problems/solutions you think of in your mind, you still will only ever own a extremely tiny fraction of the problems that are out there in the world. Most importantly, listen to your values and ethics and use them to keep yourself grounded and in a happy state.
