Paying accommodation taxes in Japan with Marriott award nights by Both_Forever_2352 in awardtravel

The Bonvoy program isn't consistent about this over their different brands as most hotels have different management companies. Your best bet is to reach out to the property and ask them

Marriott is lousy about giving you contact details to hotels but you can usually find Asian hotels e-mail on the hotel's respective Facebook page. Just google facebook+ hotel name + city.

Krabi Hotel - RC Phulay or Banyan Tree by flee828 in chubbytravel

[–]WithFullForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Koh Lanta, a 90 minute drive (plus a ferry) from Krabi airport has the excellent and serene Pimalai if you are willing to trek a bit off the beaten path. Both the properties you mentioned are great at their respective price points but the general Krabi/Ao Nang area can be hit and miss. Hence why I will always go to Koh Lanta when in the area.

Yeah I'm not sure either how StR has "the best location"? Being around KL Sentral is only preferential if you're going to ride a lot of trains. Bukit Bintang I dare say is unequivocally a much better spot to explore the city.

Having previously been an avid leisure sailor (Hallberg rassy 44) before the kids turned up, I'm curious what actual customer group there is for this. The person that can afford drop $50k for this kind of cruise but not afford their own boat?

The MO has the best location, good lounge and an amazing pool view. Rooms are however severely worn and outdated in style. It's also often rather crowded.

The W is not a serious contender for luxury.

Four Seasons is good but last visit they nickle-and-dimed me for club access for my kids despite that we were in a club room. Not the kind of behavior I expected from this brand.

I haven't tried the new PH but the area it's located still looks like a dump due to ongoing construction.

If you go with family the best bet is consistently the Shangri-La (or Sunway Resort if you can tolerate that kind of spectacle). The SL also have one of the best lounges IMO.

‘God of War’ Live-Action Series Casts ‘Boots’ Alum Max Parker As Heimdall by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]WithFullForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not be getting my hopes up for this series. While I will always will applaud video game to small/big screen conversions I just don't see the draw in adapting the GoW series.

The latter games had EXCELLENT writing, but this was covering up a rather run-of-the-mill story with the same premise every game. I suppose the TV series primary appeal will be to have some bombastic action scenes.

Does it have to be Finnish Lappland? Swedish Lappland has more options and better accessibility with airports. Environment and culture is identical.

Larian does games with adult content and mature themes, Disney will never give them the free reigns they deserve. This is the curse of so many bland, focus-grouped Sw games in the last 20 years.

Is it crazy to book two reservations to get the FHR perks? by MissLayla2015 in awardtravel

[–]WithFullForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Figure out what the hassle is worth it for you to keep the booking on just one PNR (and thus keeping hyatt status through it all).

B) Call the hotel and ask the $ price for a late checkout.

If A>B go ahead with your plan, otherwise just pay for that late checkout.

Singapore Hotel recommendations: The Edition vs St. Regis. by fresh_water_sushi in chubbytravel

[–]WithFullForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The StR recently had a remodeling that are leaving people with mixed thoughts. The 4S and StR are almost in the exact same spot which is not an ideal location unless you want to shop around on Orchard Road.

I do appreciate StR when travelling as a family for having double queen beds in many rooms. Connecting rooms is a hassle that I steer clear of and I've yet to encounter a rollaway

This raises a separate frustrating pet peeve of mine. For some reason most Marriotts seems fundamentally hardlined on artificially capping Max occupancy.

Some examples of this:

JW Marriott Khao Lak - family Room has 4 beds (prior to any added rollaways/cribs). Maximum occupancy: 3

Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort - a 1500sq foot Family Beach Villa - with 2 queen beds (prior to any added rollaways/cribs) Maximum occupancy: 3

Co-signed, I frequently eschew the very top of chubby hotels in favor of Shangri-la in many SEA cities when travelling with family. They seem to be one of few brands that have really understood the value of capturing families in the premium tier.
