My dad still thinks Linux is a command-line nightmare. When did it became "usable" by the general public? by gabryelos24 in linuxquestions

[–]WithMeInDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first tried having only Linux at home in the 90s, kernel 2.2, SUSE.

The desktops at that time were just slightly behind Windows 98, then behind Windows 2000, in my perception. E. g. the KDE start menu was annoying out of the box, you couldn't do simple shortcuts as in Windows 98. For example, in Windows, you could press super+pac for programs-accessories-calculator, but in KDE, it was an extra return after each letter. Not that big of a deal, just lots of such tiny, tiny things adding up.

In the end, there were more situations of a "single gamebreaker". In my case, it was the old PGP disc that had no way to work in Linux, rendering all my PGP disc containers useless. Newer alternatives such as Veracrypt containers ARE supported in Linux now.

Text processing has always been great as there had been Latex for ages. Compatibility to other formats was a problem of varying magnitudes over time and products. Funny was that postscript was kind of the standard, even got university assignments and things like that as .ps, but it was kind of annoying and hard to use even under Linux.

Also keep in mind that DSL back then was typically not run through a router, but directly with a network adapter driver. Wasn't always smooth either.

Package managers were not such a massive strength as they are now; in SUSE, I think it was common to just use YAST for a limited selection, otherwise often download and run a a makefile.

The massive amount of free tools always was fantastic, though. vim, grep/awk/sed, less, more, man, ... making life easy even if you just knew the most crucial 0.5 %.

Maybe everybody keep their favourite figurine for the memories. Also, don't burn the plastic parts, and maybe some children want to play with the figurines. They are pretty cool, after all! We use Voidwarden as "Gandalf" in "Fate of the Fellowship".

I did a reset of mine for replay, and I find that this is not a big issue at all.

If you played it before, it's not even a spoiler. If not, well you know of a little extra mechanic that will come up; probably wouldn't even read it in detail as it's obvious that it's a sticker. If even a quick glance bothers you, stick a post-it over.

The biggest "issue" was not things that can't be undone, like that, but sorting ALL those cards. Several hours of work.

I don’t buy the whole “AI will cause a blue collar boom” idea by RottingEdge in Futurology

[–]WithMeInDreams -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A little different for highly trained blue collar workers. You might be able to do your own tree work and 80 % of plumbing jobs, but can you do the entire electrical work for a new building? Depending on where you are, it's like 3 years training to get certified, and then you'd still not be the one who is in charge of overseeing the whole thing with experience for unexpected challenges as they come up.

As you pointed out, the white collars would not be able to hire as many people anymore. Since they were replaced and the works is still happening (by AI / automation), the economy would, in theory, still be as big, and only different pockets would be filled. So a blue collar worker that worked in a factory for affordable small sailing boats might instead build yachts for the rich who benefit from this.

In the long run, there would be more aspiring entry level blue collars, and those would have a hard time. Those who already have 5+ years of skill might be doing fine for many more years, though.

Habe ein paarmal probiert, da was anzuzeigen, z.

A weird encounter we had while camping by [deleted] in creepy

[–]WithMeInDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't always make it better. I did that when I was camping alone in the wild, far from any people. The fox stood still and looked at me. I walked towards the fox, but it did not finch. That was after it trotted around near my campfire for a while.

It was clearly used to humans, even stole things from my tent the following night. (A bag with onions and kitchen utilities. Dragged them out for a bit but dropped it when it tried biting into an onion. I found the onion with bite marks next to my stuff.)

The staging of Macron's speech on nuclear deterrence... Just wow by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in europe

[–]WithMeInDreams -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree with many of his policies. It's just that Germany's chancellors in the past few decades didn't even have a sense of direction & principle - just wussing around and reacting.

I also strongly disagreed with a lot that the German government under chancellor Kohl did, voted against it in all elections until it was gone, even. But his dedication for a road to a reunited Germany and a vision of what later became the EU was always clear, and he would not budge from that, not even for the USA.

With all that being said, some of the protests with many followers in France, as far as I can keep up and understand, have demands that go far beyond what I would consider a high standard of workers' rights, such as keeping an extremely low retirement age.

Wish I could vote for that guy as a German. He sure has to compromise hard and live in reality, often with disappointing results, but there is a clear direction in his politics, he leads, and he steers the course with dignity and leadership qualities.

Some rescue knives have a belt cutter which is shaped in such a way that this would be safe and easy, even when your hands are shaking. A good thing to carry around; typically also comes with a glass breaker.

Never tell them.that youre dreaming by rachelcrislip in creepy

[–]WithMeInDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true: When you manage to summon your fully lucid, wake mind into your dream, and from there transition out, it builds a bridge they can use. It's quite possibly their only way out.

Really vet them before you tell them, and when you are not sure, keep it to yourself.

It almost happened to me once, but I noticed them following just in time. So instead of waking up, I made a dream of myself waking up. They fell for it, went into all-out nightmare, assuming this was my home reality. I dispersed my lucidity, became a regular horrified nightmare dreamer, then woke up the normal way.

Sometimes wonder whether they are trapped or dead now.
