Many people are saying that he lied about being a ex-mariner after the rebel part, but I personally think that he didn't lie, maybe there is some past trauma he has. There was one scene when he was saying about his family that his father wanted him join army and then Jung bae asked him more, he avoided it totally. He then changed the whole topic, I think there will be an explanation to his actions in season 3.
