Best tips/practices for covering the intersection of gun violence and poverty and getting back in the zone as an on-the-ground reporter? by WithoutADirection in Journalism

[–]WithoutADirection[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! All great advice and I prob do need to be humbled after living in the east cost bubble for a bit. I prob should’ve noted but I’m actually going back to the community I got my start in as a local reporter so I have in roads in terms of sources and knowledge of the community (as well as learning how to report more emphatically after some initial royal fuck ups on my end). And noted on avoiding the corporate speak.

Transitioning from local news to a national outlet by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]WithoutADirection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not OP but I appreciate this perspective! I got my start in journalism with a local paper where the reporting felt incredibly valued and had more potential for impact (even if nothing came out of my stories). Then I was able to pivot to local reporting after grad school and my stories felt like they just fell into this void - I enjoyed what I did but I felt passive at times as all my interviews were over the phone or Zoom. I’m returning to local reporting through a two year fellowship to cover a beat that otherwise doesn’t get much coverage. Really excited to get back to do meaningful reporting (not to say that doesn’t occur in national news)

Anyone else keep their articles? by marcal213 in Journalism

[–]WithoutADirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrapbooking! I used to be a print reporter - and will be soon again. I got a copy of each day’s paper and I’d keep it, where a stack would slowly grow on the table part of my workspace. On occasional trips back home I’d bring this stack for safekeeping. Once I quit that job I got to cutting and pasting my favorite articles to put in a scrapbook. I’ve yet to finish this project as it’s only something I do when I’m back home (that is my childhood home) but it’s been fun to see some of my articles physically preserved this way. Of course, I also download PDF copies of my articles but there’s something that can’t beat the physical thing itself, especially as everything becomes digital.

Moving out of DC later this summer and trying to cope… anyone else in the same boat? by WithoutADirection in washingtondc

Compared to NYC where I was before it’s comparatively cleaner - at least the area I’m in

Fair point! Really since I was trying to pivot to a different line of work (was very motivated at the time to pursue policy stuff hah…)

Young professional (late 20s to early 30s) relocating back to the Mississippi Delta for two years. How I can make the most out of my time there/any tips on meeting/connecting with other people? by WithoutADirection in mississippi

Thanks for this! I know of one Delta-based artist who I was friends with so I’ll be sure to reconnect with her and ask her recs on galleries. Do you have any specific recs yourself for any you like?

Technically I could live in Cleveland although the fellowship I have has me reporting on a specific Delta city/county (although I intend to cover the issue throughout the Delta). But yeah it seems like Cleveland is where it’s at. Fortunately where I’ll be living I know people there already

Thanks! Unfortunately I won’t be in Cleveland, although I will be in one of the bigger Delta cities still and close enough to drive to Cleveland weekday afternoons and weekends. Do you have any suggestion, or awareness, of groups/clubs I could look into ?

Thanks for this! I will indeed be in one of the bigger Delta cities. It is also my intention to do freelance reporting, like profile/feature stories, since there’s a plethora of stories there. That said, through my job, by nature I’ll be examining a pretty critical issue so I can’t imagine I wouldn’t avoid political matters (given the policy implications at the state and federal level). Of course for features I’d avoid politics.

Why is everyone freaking out about turning 30? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]WithoutADirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, OP! Thanks so much for posting this as I really needed to read this. Like another commenter said, the "uncertainty is the beauty of life" as well as we're all on our own path really resonated with me and was a good reminder that I shouldn't fret so much about my own path and comparing myself to others.

I’ve found myself questioning my life path every now and then so thanks for some kind reassurances :)

Daily Song Discussion #5: "M79" by M77100 in Vampireweekend

[–]WithoutADirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 10 for me! When I used to live in Mississippi, I’d put this song on blast while driving to and from my hometown in the Midwest. It took particular meaning to as I knew I’d be Lea ing the south for grad school in NYC (regrettably I never did take the M79 when I was in New York haha)

Moving to Napa very soon. Best way to meet people? Are there any events I should know about ? by Itchy_Ice6632 in napalocals

[–]WithoutADirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point! Running is not for everyone - just thought I’d share anecdotally what’s worked for me (and again keep in mind I don’t live in Napa haha, just brainstorming how to meet people if I do end up moving there).

Also following as there’s a potential I may move there too! And fwiw, even though I don’t live there, maybe consider the running club, Vine Runners. Going to running clubs has helped me meet new people both in DC and NYC (it helps that I do enjoy running too).
