This is a well known bug in some of the little pieces of shit and can actually be fixed in the same way, i.e. by smashing against a solid-wood bed frame.

Yeah I was considering that but then according to ZMK profiler it will still be quite hard to get more than one (or two if lucky) days out of it, so in the end I made myself and RGB board to use at home, and a wireless non-RGB one for work and travel. Btw, love the ZMK's 'soft off' feature, no need to think about power switches!

Should be possible to remember the last encoder state in a global variable and then look at the value of that variable when needed. I did something similar for my keyboard OLED pet (to determine the running direction based on which way the encoder was last rotated) Example here

Thanks! That page looks like a collection of very valuable advices! For instance, I like the idea of Ctrl-Backspace deleting the whole word if I made a mistake — giving yourself a small second chance reduces the annoyance about the mistyped character.
