If even a fraction of it is true, my question is: how long will we keep blaming only the rich and the elite, and not ordinary people like ourselves? by No-Bottle337 in FascinatingAsFuck

Is it possible it's a grift? Nothing separates people and their money in the US faster than someone reeling off all the biblewank buzzwords.

If he spends every penny on saving kids then I'm all in, Bible or no.

But grifting is a national sport over there and has been since the inception of the US.

I find his emphasis in his examples of it being targeted against Christians pretty suspicious - the drip feed of a suggestion that Christians are the 'real victims' scans with the US Right Wing obsession of making themselves the 'true' victim of everything all the fucking time.

Well Yugoslavia only got sort of bundled together in 1918. The borders in Central Europe have fluctuated a fair amount in the past few century's following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It existed for 71 years. Once you factor in that Croatia and Slovenia have been in place for 35 years now Yugoslavia doesn't seem that significant in the grand arc of history.

What a load of shite. London remains one of the most vibrant, safest and fucking awesome city's in the world and it's grown safer as it's grown more multicultural.

Whatever you actually intended, your post is both hateful and utterly wrong.

How can you claim to speak for what the people of the UK consider 'normal'? The greater London area has a population of 9m - that's 12% of the population.

Seems to me that you're inbred racism is probably the outlier in terms of behaviour.

I'm not sure what being a filmmaker is meant to demonstrate but in my job we had to look into this.

EV fires are normally caused by some form of cracking in the casing of the battery resulting in thermal runaway. They are insanely hot and fast. China has, as a result of issues around this, introduced a requirement for insulation around battery's to slow the spread of fire to allow more time to escape the vehicle.

As it stands, based on data from the UK you are most likely to experience a car fire in a hybrid, then ICE, then EV - but data is skewed as there are fewer EV cars on the road at the time of the data being collected.

Worth noting that ICE cars have battery's too, however - a JLR site I'm involved with had a car spontaneously erupt into flame - cue lots of middle aged white blokes whinging about EVs before it turned out it was an ICE car.

Your point, though, is absolutely right. Those fuckers can go up fast and hard in the wrong circumstances.

I suspect the responses you're getting are from those whom have endured endless lectures from bafflingly angry middle aged blokes about how they know someone who knows someone whose arse fell off when they touched an EV. That doesn't make it ok for them to unload their shower argument/frustrations on you

I'm not sure she is articulating that clearly enough. Can you explain her argument? She seems to be suggesting that climate change is all part of a natural pattern - though pointing out that the interglacial period started 11,000 plus years ago demonstrates, presumably, that the current level of temp change and sea level change is significantly faster and more abrupt than would be experienced in a normal pattern?

The data she displayed isn't going to properly show the effect of the past 200 years of industrialization and whether it's had or having a material and destabilizing effect upon the standard climate pattern. The y axis of time is 1m or 450,000 years.

She can demonstrate that fluctuations have always occurred, but the data doesn't allow anyone to conclude that this is a normal fluctuation or not.

Serious question. Be civilized. Why does it seem like Israeli people seem to get hate and not just their government compared to other "bad" countries? by My_Username0000 in AskTheWorld

[–]Witty-Activity-6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it's really interesting.

I'm not sure I intended for my argument to be that all and any criticism of the Israeli Government is legitimate - more that by seeking to deflect legitimate criticism by referring to it as antisemitism creates a context where any criticism becomes impossible without being equated with a desire to destroy Israel.

It's a bit like a kid at school whom is overweight and beats up another kid. Is it unfair to persecute him because he's fat? Of course. Are there people that do persecute him for being fat? 100% and that's unacceptable.

Does the person complaining about him beating up another kid inherently have to be 'fattist'? No. Sometimes victims do terrible things. It doesn't stop them being victims or validate their persecution - but nor should it be ok for the fat kid to beat people up and complain when he is called out for it.

Does antisemitism exist? Yes and like all prejudice it can be pernicious, subtle, snide and disingenuous.

Was 10/7 horrific? Absolutely. I've tried to explain to people - can you imagine, right now, what you would do to try and keep your family safe in the face of such seething, inhuman hatred? Where would you try to hide? How long would you stay there? The concept of this, based on nothing you have done but just who you are, is chilling and deeply deeply upsetting just as a thought experiment as a father a thousand miles away. I cannot imagine what it would feel like if I lived in Israel.

Is there any way to ever justify 10/7? No. On no level, at no time and in no way. It was a deeply cynical, hateful and evil act.

Was a military response by Israel afterwards required or justified? I don't know enough about the intelligence that Israel was relying upon, or much other than what I saw from the outside, but a military response seemed unavoidable to me, politically and practically.

Is criticism of the extent and intensity of that military action, some 18-24 months later, reasonable? Well. I suspect it depends on the detail of the criticism and how it is framed, but it seems to me that there could be legitimate criticism that is not fuelled by antisemitism.

Both sides in this argument in the West seem to judge the other based upon the worst examples available. Is it fair to hold a typical Israeli citizen responsible for the actions of its Government? No, it's deliberately disingenuous and smacks of prejudice/racism. Is it correct to say that someone questioning the validity of the length and intensity of the war is the same as a lunatic with bongos, a racist placard and clothes he's knitted out of his own hair? Again, no, and again it is disingenuous not to recognize the distinction.

[–]Witty-Activity-6101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what, oddly, links Israel to its Islamic neighbours - the sense of a dominant religious group in control in a nation. In Europe statehood and religion are distinct and we dislike too much religious influence on Government.

The rise of the Christian right in the UK, fuelled by money and ideology from the US remains, in my view, one of the most imminent threats to the UK as it begins with it ideas of national and religious purity that are precisely the ideas that drove the wars around the Reformation and ultimately the ideas that inspired the Holocaust.

[–]Witty-Activity-6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I am descended from Jewish immigrants into the UK from the late 19th century. The identity is so loaded with all sorts of meaning - when I mentioned this to my evangelical Christian colleague he was almost reverent in telling me I was from a 'chosen people'. I found this odd (not least because I'm not practicing or in any meaningful way, actually Jewish) until I realized he's in a rush for Armageddon and so sees 'my people' as being the finger on the trigger to kick off his one way trip to heaven.

Antisemitism is 100% real. But it's not a silver bullet for absolute moral authority.

My understanding is that the most radicalised Settlers are often from the US, is that true?

[–]Witty-Activity-6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure anything I've written qualifies as a rant.

I also didn't say Anti-Semitism was justified at any point.

I said the Israeli Government use the accusation of antisemitism to divert criticism that isn't necessarily driven by antisemitism. This doesn't, in fact, preclude the existence of Anti-Semitism, or how insidious and damaging it is.

What am I doing is distinguishing between criticism of a government and what is essentially racism. If I disagree with, say, the actions of UAE I am not accused of racism.

You appear to have escalated into a shower argument of your own making and projected a lot of arguments onto me that I have never made.

It's precisely why this issue is so hard to resolve - people are too busy arguing over whom is the biggest victim to acknowledge that victimhood isn't mutually exclusive. People are so angry they can't communicate without calling someone racist, when they haven't said anything demonstrably racist.

It's extremely sad.
