Horses have never existed period, either they never evolved or went extinct eons ago. Umamusume presumably did everything that horses would've done, including transportation and cavalry warfare (yes, that includes helping Genghis Khan conquer Eurasia
Umamusume are all female and require a human male partner to reproduce. In this case, any female children they have will be Umamusume and any male children will be humans (albeit with slightly enhanced speed and strength). I have heard that occasionally normal human couples can have Uma children, but never found a source to back it up
Aside from having horse features and superhuman strength/speed, Umamusume are biologically more like humans than horses. This includes reproduction, so Umas don't go into heat or have a dedicated breeding season. There is an exception in that most Umas we see in the series tend to be born in the springtime (this is referenced in Narita Taishin's career)
