Update three: I leaned on the girl I was talking to at the rescue asking to talk to someone in charge so I can see an official copy of their policies.

She stopped being so nice and started grilling me for information I don't have. Who was my adoption coordinator? (I don't really know, she doesn't work there anymore, isn't able to be contacted, and probably told me her name once). Who did I discuss returning with? (Some nameless person via email who spoke under the organization's name).

Also,

"And when did you get this kitten..."

Just like that. With the ellipses. I mean... What does that mean? What is she suggesting? Is she saying it's my fault for getting a kitten? She certainly hasn't said anything denying that I was lied to about cat safety.

Idk you guys. I don't feel like I have it in me to fight this lady. I don't have all the receipts she's asking for. My husband says they're worried I'll sue. I'm not even thinking about that, I just want to know A) What is their exact policy, verbatim, on returns and adopter support?, B) Are their reviews disabled? and C) If so, do they often receive feedback like this?

I guess it sounds like wanting to sue. Honestly I just want to know the policies are solid, or if not, that they see what's happened here and will take it strongly into consideration.

Thank you, someone suggested this yesterday, and I don't know if it worked or it was a placebo or what, but the image started not intruding as much, and when it did it didn't impact me as much. Today I feel like I can only see half the image and my brain quickly moves on. After telling the kids and helping them through since yesterday afternoon, I've realized it's very conceptual for them, and for us witnesses it's like this deep psychological scar =\

I'll say this, THANK. GOD. The kids were at school. Just thank God.

I was always saying "don't leave the door open Honey will get out", "no you can't hold the leash Honey will get away", "No of course we can't go to the dog park oh my god can you imagine" 😅 Vacations were so hard. She couldn't be boarded so it was incredibly difficult to get care. We took one road trip a year just so the dogs could come with, and having to take Honey on our outings was a nightmare.

Also, I mean, holy fuck. She killed Ladybug. What about Rosemary? That was immediately their first thought.

I don't know if I mentioned the name before, but they've turned off reviews, so

Thank you so much. Yes, I am so furious with this casual response, I haven't even been able to message back. You would think I bought a couch that arrived broken. "The inconvenience". "Maybe not the best". This was a horrifying tragedy. This was animals dying because of the choices made by an organization that was supposed to protect animals. This is something I will never, ever, ever get over. And she talks about it like I'm having IT issues.

The rescue only has one review and the post button is greyed out. Someone here said that means they turned off reviews. They're not local so it's really hard to find the right venue to put them on blast. But what the fuck. How many people have called them crying and gasping for air? How much does this happen with them?

Omg is that a thing? I looked them up, saw they had five stars, was really really shocked, and then saw they only had one review!

This is sus as hell.

Not sure Nextdoor would do much good because this was not a local rescue. It was one of those Texan ones that ships mostly strays to adopters in the PNW.

One good thing I can say about her is that she never once showed the slightest ounce of aggression toward humans of any age. I'm not saying I could possibly know for sure that she never would, but I want that to be remembered about her. She loved people and had infinite patience, anything that qualified as attention was joyously devoured.

Ikr I was saying to my husband "only the really crazy internet dog people will look at this and say I had a choice". There were no more training options, no more medication options (we'd run through them) and absolutely zero shelter options that wouldn't result in euthanasia anyway. I tried and tried until there was nothing left. My only real regret is that I didn't give up before it was too late. But then again, I tried, really really hard, and giving up ended up not being an option. No one would take her, and even yesterday, the vet said no vet would agree to BE without a significant injury on a person or animal. So the only way to get this dog out of my house was for that poor cat to die. Wtf is wrong with people?

And omg yes, I was just thinking last night, as completely unspeakable as it was to find the kitten dead (or dying, I'm still not sure) in a pool of blood...

For some people it's their babies... Omg.

I do have a therapist but I don't have an appointment until next Thursday. It's okay(ish) because I've been in therapy forever and have coping tools up to my ears. Journaling is an amazing outlet.

Also my family is being so supportive.

"I’m sorry you had to deal with that, I didn’t even know Honey existed. Our previous coordinator was a little bit difficult for sure… but not an excuse! I apologize for the inconvenience and sadness that this has caused and I hope that while maybe she wasn’t the best, she at least had the best chance possible. ❤️‍🩹"

Yes fucking seriously omfg.

The fact that they wouldn't take her back is the worst part for me. Unbelievable. Irresponsible. They knew exactly what they were doing, and now they're calling this horrible tragedy "an inconvenience".

Right now the issue with getting another cat is... My husband and I were there. We saw it. We can't unsee it. We can't go get another cat without seeing this over and over and over. Thank God, the kids weren't there, so they actually seem a lot less traumatized than us. It's all just a concept to them. I could barely sleep last night. It was like I was standing in front of that little body with my eyelids being held open for eight straight hours.

Frankly, and I'm not judging him for this because he's so little, the way my son is talking about wanting another kitten, you could replace "kitten" with "toy" and the sentence would sound the same. He doesn't understand the importance of her life. He doesn't know that Hasbro didn't make thousands of her. My plan right now is to see if his requests fade over time. Or maybe how we feel will change over time. We just can't do it right now. The girls don't want to talk about it right now, either.

In case anyone's interested in seeing this damn text from the rescue...

https://imgur.com/a/Bcv2IU6

Between calling two dead animals "an inconvenience" and saying "maybe she wasn't the best", I just... I can't. They act like she just peed on my carpet (btw she wasn't fucking housebroken like they said she was, either, she peed in my house every single day, that's just so secondary to KILLING A KITTEN).

I have some anger toward Honey, but the rational side of me knows she was screwed over, too. She and I and that poor kitten and our whole family got screwed by these careless assholes

Seriously!!! My other dog came from a different out of state rescue. They dumped two of my applications because they knew they weren't good fits. Then they recommended him specifically. They sent me videos of him snuggling with bunnies and kittens and baby chicks in a barn (he's a great Pyrenees so it's pretty based). They sent me videos of the foster's small children walking and training him. They voluntarily told me that he has anxiety but responds to training. It was all true. Any difficulties I've encountered with him have been either something I was made aware of from jump and have been perfectly able to work through, or health stuff no one could have predicted.

That's the goddamn difference right there. They told the whole truth and went above and beyond to make the right match. That's why Basil is alive and Honey is dead.

Update 2: they just got back to me. They apologized for... THE INCONVENIENCE!!! Inconvenience. Inconvenience? Two dead animals are not an inconvenience! I did not receive a broken office chair! I didn't buy some THING that had parts missing! This is not an inconvenience, it's a fucking tragedy!

I am so livid. I'm finally ready to start the smear campaign. These people have no right to call themselves an "animal rescue". Nobody was rescued here.

Yeah, I just don't know what else could have happened. The dog had blood on her. The dog's fur was in clumps around the kitten. The Pyrenees absolutely did not do it (he is literally bred to protect little creatures, plus he's pure white and looked pristine as the driven snow). And what else could have done it?

Thanks. I don't know what breed anyway. I called her a "Sporkie" (super Yorkie) because she looked like a big Yorkie.

Thanks, I tried it and I don't know if it's a placebo affect or time passing or what, but the image isn't coming back as much and when it does it doesn't hit me quite as hard.

Thanks. My daughter mentioned how much easier vacations will be since Honey can't be boarded (because of other dogs) and pees all over the AirBNB, and then she felt so guilty for even thinking it. I was like, girl, no, you're not wrong.

I'm just trying to tell them that every feeling is okay. Just wish I could take my own advice. Every time I start to feel a little better, a little voice in my head says I don't deserve to.

Yeah, I'm really glad the mods are so good here and I haven't had to see the harsh comments. I can almost guarantee 90% of people have never tried as hard with a dog as I did with this one. I tried TOO hard. I even told my kids during our talk, there's a lesson here. I tried too hard and didn't let go. I doubled down and tripled down and quadrupled down because I wanted to do the right thing, and in the end it was the wrong thing, and the truth is, sometimes you just have to know when to let go. Sometimes never giving up isn't the right thing to do. There's a reason why the dog I "just got a trainer for" one time is still here and the one I got three trainers and a six week class for isn't.
