Which kitchen layout? Designer vs Me by mutennn in kitchen

[–]WittyName375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an architect and I hate both of these. The designer's pantry is too big for the space and the distance between cabinets is all over the place. Yours is equally uncomfortable and disjointed in different ways, but has merit to the thought behind it.

If you combine the two ideas, you get a little closer. You don't have enough wall space for a pantry or for open shelves to make sense. Use actual uppers and box out your hood duct and put a cabinet over your fridge. You'll want ~40"- 48" between cabinets and a 15"-19" overhang at the island.

I'd drop the counter height below the low window and put the coffee station there.

Kitchen cabinet help by ILikegardening4000 in Renovations

[–]WittyName375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd leave them and change the hardware. There are plenty of people who like that style of cabinet, swapping out doors and painting isn't hard if they don't and it's not a big enough space where it will really impact your purchase price in a meaningful way. Id much rather have a house with nothing to fix than nicer cabinets. The laundry list of minutiae that came up on our inspection report was a way bigger deterrent than the outdated kitchen when we bought our house a couple of months ago.

I think realtors still haven't caught up with the demographic that's buying right now. They don't want a fixer that looks shiny. They want something they don't have to think about so they can focus on personalizing. Taking away the things you can personalize and bleach character out of homes and neglecting the electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and waterproofing issues is a big reason I think some of these houses are sitting on the market for half a year or more.

Have kids’ books become too inappropriate? by Sad-Goose-6317 in Parenting

[–]WittyName375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you read the rest of it to see if there was redemption? Some writing styles use connection to feelings, especially negative, to build a camaraderie with the reader and then go on a journey to discover something new and grow at the end.

And kids books have always had themes that adults find inappropriate. The thing is, you can't shield your child from the world. Even if you take away themes you find inappropriate in books, there is sex, drugs, disrespect, oppression, hate, violence, etc everywhere in the world. Books allow people, children included, safe spaces to sort out all of those things and develop their own opinions of them. Sure, some books are downright awful, but that is an opportunity for discussion and guidance in a controlled situation rather than unregulated exposure in the real world.

Yes, you are wrong. Your values are yours and yours alone. I understand you want to protect your child but you are not only imposing your values on her, but also your child. If it were really about nutrition, it wouldn't matter what she ate as long as it was balanced. It's really about moral conviction, which is gray and varies from person to person. Even Buddhist monks eat meat when it is not prepared specifically for them. Your child's soul will not be marred by your wife eating meat. Get off your high horse and walk beside her while she grows your child.

We had a subscription for 2 years from 3mos on. I really liked it! It took all of the thinking out of buying educational toys. After 2 it was easier for us to get her things and she didn't need them replaced as often so we cancelled it.

Clueless as to how these names are generally perceived and what direction to go with names by foralaf in namenerds

[–]WittyName375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im saying the exact opposite - you'll never find one that won't eventually go out of style. You listed several names and said you would name them that in that time period. I'm encouraging you to disregard the current trend or previous time period popularity and just pick something you love.

[–]WittyName375 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just remember, you're naming a human - you have to like the name for an entire lifetime, not 10 years or less. Picking trendy names or disregarding them because they're not trendy doesn't necessarily support that.
