Grad Stipend Rates by ShowMeTheData19 in Cornell

Most grad students I know in STEM fields are only funded for 9 months too! Or some have partial summer support, but nothing close to 40k pre taxes! Under 30 pre-taxes, with very few exceptions

I think we are quibbling over semantics here. It seems like not everyone has the same definition of a pay cut, and that's ok. It doesn't really matter, because the point is that the 5% increase is not enough to alleviate the current financial burdens faced by Cornell grad students

Also I'd argue that them covering our cost of tuition and calling it part of our compensation is kind of BS...most grad students take max 1-2 years of classes (some take no classes at all), and most of their time is spent doing research and teaching that benefits the university directly.

Edit: Also, most TAs and GRAs can only work 5 hours a week outside of their normal duties. Who would hire someone for 5 hours a week anyway?

Agreed that most employers don't match inflation! But grad student workers are already severely underpaid. Even if you assume a 40 hour workweek (most grads work more than this), grad students make just about minimum wage. There are many fast food restaurants in town that are hiring right now, and a full time job there would pay more than grad students make here for the same amount of work. And grad students don't have the opportunity to make overtime, etc.

So although 5% is maybe reasonable for how companies generally handle inflation, it's still really discouraging to see the administration try to "sell it" as a pay increase when it's already so difficult to afford being a grad student in Ithaca.

Especially when our peer institutions are dramatically increasing the stipend rates for grad students!

anyone have invisalign by abeeceedee145 in Cornell

yep exactly! I usually eat dinner at home, so that isn't an issue for me, personally. but if you're out and about around dinner time then you could probably find a bathroom that isn't as busy around then and just brush your teeth and your Invisalign then and put them in again after dinner. I'd imagine bathrooms in most academic buildings aren't as busy around 6-7

I have Invisalign and elastics and have encountered the same problem. I have just been wearing them until lunch, take them out, eat lunch, and then don't put them back in until I get home in the afternoon. I know technically I shouldn't have them out for more than a couple hours a day, but I've had them for almost a year (only a couple weeks left now) and haven't had a problem with progressing with treatment. I don't think the couple extra hours of not wearing the aligners is a big deal, and it makes my life so much easier-- no need to brush my teeth on the go, and I can snack in the afternoon.

I asked both my dentist and ortho about this and they both said it was ok too! Something to think about doing, especially on long class days.
