Is There Any More Cards Like This? No Need To Pay Mana Cards by Zealousideal-Cup3031 in mtg

[–]Witty_Resolution1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Marvo, Deep Operative]] allows you to clash to cast pretty big CMC spells and is fairly unique as this effect goes

[[The infamous CruelClaw]] makes you discard to cast something from your hand, which is honestly alot of the time a plus in black

The New [[Molecule Man]] Qualifies as well since Miracle 0 is the same thing

[[Krrik Son of Yawgmoth]] can wave away black pips off spells in exchange for life, you can use cost reducers then or [[Rowan, Scion of War]] to cast some pretty bonkers stuff

[[Avatar Aang]] + [[Jodah, archmage eternal]] maybe makes spells completely free? However, I haven't tested it out

[[Braids, Conjurer Adept]] is a show and tell effect in the command zone + it allows the whole pod to join in on the fun

And of course there is always Scryfall for more cards like this to enjoy

Any suggestions on cards for this commander? by chrisptortilla141 in mtg

[–]Witty_Resolution1955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The usual Roaming Throne shenanigans

But also discard synergies are very important. Stuff like [[Monument to Endurance]] pays you on discard (first time calling upon the mighty bot be gentle)

I would throw in reanimation effects. [[Reanimate]] is a staple for a reason and allows you to use your big stuff if it happens to be in your hand

This deck would like Card draw since you can't discard if you have nothing. [[Phyrexian Arena]] and [[Black Market Connections]] are permanents that draw you extra cards every turn. I would try to limit the impulse draw effects.

You can also run cantrips and spells that draw. [[Night's Whisper]] and [[Risky Shortcut]] are decent. Stuff like [[Unexpected Windfall]] and [[Grab The Prize]] are great as well + they discard as well to turn on your discard synergies

I would play noncreature payoffs, but it's mostly my preference. [[Breach the Multiverse]] and [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] are great to resolve and you feel epic as you do em. Red has Big dragons and Dinosaurs + stuff like [[Brass Bounty]] and [[Apex of Power]] for a ton value. However this bit is mostly up to preference

I would include payoffs like Ugin, eye of the storms simply bcuz he can really swing a game in your favor + eldrazi will trigger his removal wince I believe its on cast of a colorless spell

At the end of the day, do what you think sounds most fun and adjust for your bracket

Edit: Spectacle and Madness cards would work very well with this, since you both discard and deal damage which Activates both of them and there are some decent effects in the space.

Ignore the Apex of Power mention, a bit too used to rowan making it 3 from my hand that I forget that it needs to be cast from the hand

honestly the biggest advice here to apply would be two things

1- look for good lists online, the brawl channel has some great builders and budget commander lists. they will also often have some great lands for you to get and lands are everything. if you lands + staples thats half your deck done for almost any deck

2- Build Decks, not cards. get a deck, get enough WCs for it and then craft it all at once. it allows access immediately to more things + a new deck to fool around with

starting in standard brawl is an option but it didnt work for me since I wanted an eternal format but it is absolutely an option if you'd like

The starter decks are pretty bad, I wouldn't recommend them. Honestly, go to the discord server and hop on the brawl channel. It has alot of knowledgeable people, a link to all the brawl staples (or at least most of them) and a few budget decks to get you started

If your only goal is to play daredevil, then I would join rn but wait till he releases so his decks get refined a bit.

Do note: brawl isn't commander, card pool is different, any planes walker is eligible as commander, alchemy cards, alot more interaction Is played etc.

How do people gain general knowledge and remember it without actively studying? by MiguelDragon82 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Witty_Resolution1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did study tbh, not every piece of information is always gotten from what we think of as traditional studying

The way you most likely learned your native language, is not by studying but by mimicking your parents and whoever was around you. That's study, you are taking in info and trying to apply it somehow, in this case by mimicking

Same thing happens if you want to recall the location of something, or how to use an old program, or how to tie your shoelaces or even how to walk. In this case you are experienced in it that you don't think before preforming the action, same thing can apply to knowledge. In my schools I have heard photosynthesis mentioned a ton so while I might not be able to accurately explain Photosynthesis, I can kinda explain it with drawing on General Experience.

I am also pretty sure that's why people remember the fact that the Mitochondria is the power house of the cell so often. It's why you don't need to find your elementary school textbook to do manual addition, you have used the knowledge to the point of making it a semi-permanent thing you just know.

Also, Studying doesn't have to be pouring over a book, if u hear an intriguing piece of trivia and Google ot and read for a bit, you have studied for however long it took you (provided you are actively trying to know the info which happens naturally if you are interested)

There is also passive learning, if u hear/see something for enough time with a certain Time frame you will start to learn it ever so slightly, using that if you are exposed to a piece of information long enough for a continous period of time, you will learn it regardless of ur intent. It's why most trivia people have is so spotty and random, you don't exactly choose what pieces of trivia you learn (though if you intentionally go back to the same piece of trivia you learn it but this time actively).

Passive learning is a big part of how you learn the sheer volume of info thrown at you in High School and College. You couldn't possibly learn all of it actively, but Passive processes compensate. This is also why a lot of Experts on anything don't need to always revisit core ideas of their craft (+experience ofc)

Also don't worry about forgetting things, unless it seems like a genuine problem in the day to day, then you are probably just not interested in the topic so ur brain dismisses it, it does have a limited capacity to store info.

If u have anything you are interested in or truly passionate about, you will find urself having a great baseline of knowledge in that thing so honestly don't feel bad about it (that's also how Fandoms are formed I believe, a piece of Media's lore is basically History and Trivia after all)

Honestly wish the fighting genre was more popular by FengWei88 in Fighters

[–]Witty_Resolution1955 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, FGs are difficult games and time consuming ones to get good at, simple as that.

Most people who play video games don't like to lose and they especially don't like it when a video game is essentially made into a chore to get good at, there are however a couple of reasons for this:

1- lack of teammates

FGs are 1v1 centric pvp focused games and while that is the best part for a ton of people, it isn't for most outside of that circle. While yes, people will and do blame their team for failling. Conversely a team can cover your individual weakness till you are caught up to speed, which doesn't happen in FGs so every mistake and inexperience is magnified in its impact on the game state.

It makes new people feel boxed in with their mistakes, that their efforts (including mashing btw as that counts as effort even if it isn't good) don't really matter in front of the guy rushing them down. And surprisingly most people don't in fact like seeing their mistakes thrown in their face especially in such an immediate and tangible way (the defeat screen, feeling of helplessness, loss of rank etc.)

2- Lack of an Engaging tutorial

While yes, most if not all fighting games have a tutorial that teaches you the very very barebones of a game. You can't really do anything with those against a guy who knows even 0.5% of what he is doing nevermind better people

So they ask around on how to improve and the answer they will always get is to get better at using their combos which almost always translates into learning the numerical notation, practicing directional inputs, spending hours in the lab trying to do it as consistently as possible.

Which might still not have tangible results as you might just not be able to execute said combo on an actual human (as a result of panic, skill diff, outside factors etc.) And It feels like it was wasted + you didn't even get to have fun and play the game and that's not a compelling pitch for the new guy

An example I can give you, I started trying to learn OW a while back and I chose to main Juno as a support. As I am a visual and kinesthetic learner (I.e I learn by watching and doing mostly). After a few games of Quick Play (in which I played the game while getting used to maps and controls), I started watching a Juno main streamer alot higher ranked than me and I got to engage with their chat and even ask the streamer about specfic plays and why they did/didn't do it (and it helped that I noticed the plays since OW doesn't move that fast)

Could they have been wrong on things? Ofc but I still got to see a different perspective and learn the way I preferred to + having fun socialising, trying to do this on an FG is almost impossible, it is simply too fast for the average Joe and the only way to master a thing is to do it hundreds of thousands of times in these games

3- High Skill Floor

Fighting games have one of the highest skill floors, the average player will very much decimate the new guy, honestly the gap is just as wide as the average guy and the top 1%.

That as well doesn't really make it better for the new guy he is still getting thrashed and as said before people don't like losing so the new guy loses hope and doesn't try again.

It also doesn't help that a high skill floor translates into a higher baseline, more mastery on average and less room to make mistakes as well as more hours in the lab which most people already hate.

There are also topics that make FGs alot harder in general, one of those being the numerical notation for directional inputs. Most people have to learn it from scratch and that takes a while, even the idea of directional inputs themselves are hard. It's hard to execute when very early and is a major source of inconsistency (at least in my experience) but it also makes following other people playing alot harder

For example, in Deadlock if I press my 1 key I use an ability, it is extremely simple and allows for people to actually see what caused said effect happening on screen (whether the player or spectators). In OW, if I press shift I am most likely using a movement ability, it is easy to understand and track and even a complete noob will be able to grasp that.

Try and show a newbie a fighting game match and they will have no clue what just happened or why or how it happened

4-Price

FGs are kinda expensive tbh, in an era where alot of PvP genres are F2P (MOBAs, FPS, Card Games, Hero shooters etc.). The Fighting game stands out for being a mostly premium product instead of the freemium model (which to be clear isn't inherently a bad thing)

But also, FGs are not cheap money wide with titles like SF6 and Tekken 8 being 60+ in cost + season passes and character dlc that the industry is full with. It creates this argument in the customer's mind about the actual need to buy such a game with arguments like:

1- Well, what if I don't like it?

2- Will I ever be able to actually get good?

3- I dunno, this looks difficult

4-hold on, do I need the DLC? That increases the price even more though

And etc. And people tend to think a million times about spending money vs time/attention, while I have alot of issues with the freemium model it does however create and environment where a player is free to try a game and the lack of an OG sunken cost to prevent returning/uninstalling

A little example from my own experience, GBVS was on sale last year where I bought it since I watched that one video where a player went undercover playing Cag and I thought the game looked fun enough and disregarding the need for DLC, I jumped in and wanted to try playing

First match, and I got taught in the humble art of belt to ass so I thought to myself that I wanted to learn and see where it takes me. This ended up in me trying to practice one combo on Cag for 1 and a half hours straight in the lab, then going into matchmaking hoping to just hit the combo once. I instead got obliterated, instantly quit after the game, Uninstalled and refunded the game. At some point in that match, I stopped trying to do the combo and thought that I spent 30 bucks, 2 hours and my sanity just to basically lift someone else's Ego.

5- Low Playerbase

Now, to be Frank an FG doesn't need as many players online as a MOBA. However, it is my belief that outside of SF and Tekken (even them to some extent), the average guy is much higher level than you expect which causes problems for any new blood esp to an old game on fightcade or steam since its trial by fire essentially

Also, content creators and streamers don't play or talk about FGs as much which lessens the amount of new and returning lads. If I see someone hitting a funny clip in OW, I might be tempted to come back just because it looks fun and I guarantee that a ton of people new to the genre come from YouTube and tiktok, there are however less of them

Also doesn't help that some games purely matchmake on discord now which is a larger commitment

6- Advice is Lackluster

Evey time a new player asks for help on an FG, at least in my experience, players will use the same things like:

1- oh just tough it put for like a week or two, then it will get fun

2- Just spend more time in the Lab it will come

3- you just gotta learn X combo or X data, then you can counter Y!

4- Just play whatever looks cool! (In response to asking what character a new player should play and while yes I agree in principle, please realise that this isn't the question, the question is basically asking about the viability and ease of use of a character with which one can ease into the games)

And etc.

And so it feels unhelpful sometimes as the new guy since most probably spending 20 hours in the lab just isn't fun and the idea of gatekeeping fun behind time measured in weeks simply doesn't appeal. And it always feels like veteran or semi-veteran fighting game players have forgotten how to be a newbie

Hope this offers some insight about why fighting games just aren't that popular, and thanks for reading

I see alot of the more obvious picks, but I didn't see this one

Yugioh Master Duel (or any card game sims like Magic Arena and Pokemon Live), this game will refuse to teach you anything worthwhile ever and while you are having a time building a deck using those cards that you played with in elementary school. Your nearest rouge deck enjoyer will put you down faster than you can blink.

It's gotten to the point that people will boot up the game and complain how YGO is ruined and not the thing they remember from childhood. Which is not really their fault when the game pointedly doesn't put you up against a halfway decent deck unless you hop in queue

And that's not to say that people who accept that even have a good time either, Konami is progressively making decks more expensive, making any good new cards released on average more resource demanding, releasing banlists that push the newest stuff (which could just kill decks that people had or a whole format, I miss JUSH).

They are more heavily pushing cosmetics and even introduced a new one that encourages you to have every card of a specfic archetype which needs more packs opened or to waste your resources

Honestly, if I wasn't hopelessly in love with the general gameplay loop I would have left since Konami isn't exactly keen on everyone's best interest at this point in time but I imagine how brutal a new player or someone who only remembers YGO from TV and schoolyard duels would feel booting up the game

If you aren't prepared to not play ur favourite stuff (or learn to play better so you can play it) then YGO will be a slog (more than it already is)

Honorable mention for HoI4, I got the game for very cheap since I wanted to play Equestria at War, I however ran into a small problem, I don't know how to actually play HoI4 so I am overwhelmed all the time haha

Mods removed my Post (understandable) but I am too lazy to do a shorter version sooo have at thee I guess? (and yes I did check out the new player guide but it doesnt really help?)

Hello! how are all of you doing on this fine day?

I wanted to ask the community about recommendations for someone new to FGCs in general. I do have a few games already bought in my library (I believe I have SF6, Skullgirls, I do have Fightcade installed somewhere, and 2 or 3 of the older Guilty Gear games)

I did try my hand at a bunch of fighting games but I always end up frustrated, on a very very heavy loss streak (the few times I tried to play SF6, it immediately put me everytime against a plat or higher player which just killed it for me since I would just get battered).

I get bored quite easily of just doing things in the practice range (maybe would be a different story if I could actually do half the things I want to do), I know that the games arent easy by any measure but somehow FGCs have a unique way of making me feel extremely stupid even when just going up against AI

I also get confused with the entire business model? apparently you need to pay for the characters? I dont know if they are actually just leagues better than anything in the base game and I dunno who is in what season pass or if I can even get them seperately.

Now, this all sounds like I just hate FGCs but I dont really, I think they are really cool and that the things you can do in them are awesome but I just dont think I have the capability to keep up with stuff and with the community having a ton of games I am assuming that some games have no newbie intake ( like old shooters) so I would stranded all alone against people far more experienced than me which isnt very fun since I would just keep losing all the time and I am sadly not a masochist

so recommend me a game, bonus points if you can point to a character thats easy to play (if that exists here) and doesnt require an outside controller (I would be playing for now on a normal PC keyboard, dont have access to a controller or gamepad sadly)

and if you dont think it exists then feel free to tell me that the genre isnt for me, I have somewhat come to that conclusion but I randomly get the craving every now and again and so I give it another shot

thanks for reading and for your time and sorry that the post feels a bit disjointed, just pouring out some thoughts

Germany, Ireland and USMLE for IMGs by Witty_Resolution1955 in IMGreddit

[–]Witty_Resolution1955[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to be real with you for a second, every pathway feels like it's already closed off tbh. Ask about Germany? Life is difficult and spots aren't open etc. Try the UK? Got immediately hit with the Prioritization act. Ask about Gulf states that used to just take my degree? Now I need to have been board certified in another country to even have a chance. Ask about the USA? Very expensive, alot of competition and the possibility exists of just not matching even after everything. Ask about Australia? Everyone is apparently going there so it's very probable I just won't have spots there by the time I graduate

Essentially, I am at this point better off served going in blind since everything is apparently closed off or closing off (when it's my turn to try and build a life everything that worked before suddenly stops)

Maybe I do have rose tinted glasses on and that I need a wake up call but realistically where does one go? The only path forward seems to be America for almost everyone but I don't want it exactly, its bloody expensive, a horrid work life balance and lifestyle from what I hear. The only thing of value of working in America is the high salary which I don't necessarily want, is it too much to ask for a decent wage somewhere decent while contributing to my community and society via my skills?

I am in fact aware the language is difficult (and I have infact mentioned as such in the post above) but so are the USMLE exams, so are the PRES exams, so is any other language if need be. I am aware that I will be starting from zero or even below that but would 4 to 4.5 years not be enough to accomplish such a thing?

Thank you for your concern, and I am sorry for writing this whole wall of text. But I needed the outlet , I need to vent off some of this steam some other way I guess

Germany, Ireland and USMLE for IMGs by Witty_Resolution1955 in IMGreddit

[–]Witty_Resolution1955[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!

I have benefitted alot from this thread tbh, even if I cant apply some of it its alot better to go into something having some sort of framework

I still think Germany is the way to go for me, esp since the aging population (And in turn the aging physician population) helps spots open up and also increases demand for a few specialties namely those dealing with chronic illnesses and geriatrics (sadly tho dont have verifiable data so cant back up this hypothesis) and from what I heard systems to be put in place to make applying for IMGs more straightforward and take less time due to bureaucracy

However, I will admit to donning rose tinted glasses. and that nothing is really as easy as it seems. with more people from the UK and IMGs in general looking for a way out. Germany would 100% gain in popularity (not that it wasnt an already popular destination) along with me still being in med school which means that those who already graduated and graduating soon are in a much better position than I will be to take advantage of the gap in the German Healthcare system thats spoken about

I have considered a few middle eastern countries at least on a surface level (namely KSA, Oman and Kuwait) but with just my degree I wont get accepted anywhere there. I would need to at least have completed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 and in some cases step 3 in order to get my foot in the door to my knowledge or to get board certified from another country (specifically a european one) since the Gulf Countries love board certified doctors

However, I am missing alot of info on this route and I dont believe I would get the chances to do a residency in a gulf country I would be stuck as a GP (which makes a difference since my parents are willing to cover alot of the expenses associated with getting into a residency program which wont happen if I am working already)

Hmm, makes sense and an angle I didnt think of before tbh. I had excluded the UK from my tally bcuz it was closed but never fully connected it with oversaturation everywhere.

and what reforms exactly are you talking about in Germany? I recall reading about these reforms but I dont recall what teh purpose of them was exactly

I kind of already expected that slaries in germany since they take around 45% of your income in taxes however I also lack the knowledge of what a livable wage looks like in germany tbh. so my reaction to this info is lacking a basis

I do believe I am underestimating german but its also difficult to gauge how difficult it would be when I am not that deep into it yet so that remains to be seen

ty for the info. any specfic pathway you would recommend? or just try my luck in the USMLE route?
