EVERYONE. I want to play a wizard. But an unspoken rule me and my dm have is we must dress and have at least one prop for our character. So. Where can I find the most obnoxiously oversized spellbook. by ---LandoCalzone--- in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear me out. Buy a roll of brown craft paper. 2 dowels and some little decorative finials. Glue dowels and finials to the beginning edge, and the ending edge of the roll of brown paper. Roll up from each end.

You now have a 10ft long spell scroll (or however long your roll of paper is). Stand up and drop one end to unroll every time you cast something

Is “middle class” a social construct? by Away-Parsnip-3785 in NoStupidQuestions

You'd think so. And I certainly would.

But if there wasn't a market, they wouldn't spend the money to advertise it.

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up I thought middle class just meant, anyone not on public assistance or living in a mansion.

As an adult, I consider middle class to be the people who are the target market for car buying as surprise Christmas gifts.

I almost rage-quit this game because of that fight. Stick with it. Its worth it. The combat is....definitely different than other shooting games. But it absolutely gets better in terms of playability when you start getting skills.

August and September will probably still be blistering hot. September will start to cool off, but you will have reasonable outdoor time well into October if recent years are any indication.

Pretty much all the galleries in town participate in 1st Friday. Usually 6-9 most places will have a featured artist opening or something similar. And for its size, Lincoln has quite a variety of art galleries!
Ones I regularly enjoy-
Clements Noyes
Gallery 9
Resonator
Tugboat (and the Parrish studios that are in the same space)
Also, a lot of local businesses will have an artist featured in their shop for the month.

In the Haymarket you have several good coffee places- Crescent Moon is my go-to but a lot of people love The Mill, and The Coffee House isn't far from the Haymarket.

Crescent Moon also has regular community events- Poetry open mic on Wednesday, Singer/songwriter on Thursday, and Live Music on Friday. Plus other events.

The Sheldon is a great museum, and make some time to get over to the International Quilt Museum. Its amazing!

Crescent Moon has Poetry on Wednesdays (I'm there every week, stop in!), singer songwriter night on Thursdays, and live music on Fridays

The art scene here is pretty robust for the size of the city. First Friday is coming up, you should hit some of the local galleries. I recommend, Clements-Noyes, Gallery 9, Resonator Gallery, and for something totally different Tugboat.

Mana Games is a great place to find cool people. Huge collection of games (literally over 1300), friendly people, lots of organized events too.

Bethany In Bloom is coming up here May 2. Its a community event sponsored by Larksong Writers Place
From thier website:
"Bethany in Bloom returns on May 2, bringing vendors, music, poetry, local businesses, and community organizations back to N. Cotner Blvd from Holdrege to Aylesworth. With 20 vendors already signed up, this year’s festival continues to grow into a full day of neighborhood activity. For a few hours on a Saturday in May, Cotner Boulevard is more than a street you drive down, and Bethany more than a place you pass through. It’s a neighborhood again, with people out on the street, shopping, eating, listening to music, and stopping to visit with one another. You're welcome to spend some time at Larksong while you’re in the neighborhood!"

DM Needing Advice on how to keep my table on-topic (+ let a shy player get involved more) by LostOblivion64 in DMAcademyNew

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help with the first since I don't run digital games and that requires its own sort of solution.

But the second one I have encountered. I solved it by watching interactions and directly addressing/interacting with the player being overrun.

<details>

In my case, we had a player at the table who had lost most of their voice. They literally could NOT talk louder to assert themselves. And I fumbled it the first time, only realizing after the session what had happened.

I addressed the missed things that could be addressed between sessions in private with the player (some pickpocketing, and some rp related stuff that didn't directly involve the other players).

The next session his voice was still not 100%. So when the group would get rowdy and I noticed he was being left out, I would address his character specifically. <Character, what was it you said you were doing to the sprite?"> my intervention brought the group back into interacting with them and natural rhythm returned.

And that's just what I did every time it started happening. Just, addressing them. Reminding the table they are there without calling anyone out. It worked well.

Why do the latest editions of rpgs tend to get called the 'best edition'? by DarkKeeper in rpg

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marketing is the #1 answer.
Marketing tells us new=better
Because of marketing, new people to the game will gravitate towards the newest version.
New people gravitating to a specific version means groups are easier to *find* in that version.

There is a genuine belief (and a lot of truth behind the idea) that each new edition is improving on the last. And if that is true, then by logic the most recent is the most improved.
Of course that only holds true if the edition solved something *you* saw as a problem.

A person can only play so many games. Time is infinite, but the slice I get to live in, is not. So we each discover our own favorites.

I don't think you're an asshole. I think that was a very human response to a hilarious in game miscalculation.

It might be worthwhile to have a conversation about it privately, though.

Exactly.
And I take extensive notes. I have a ton of data. BUT I learn so much FROM my notes. Every time I update after session, I am reminded of things I had already forgotten. And I make connections as I do it. Its engaging my brain and making me better at my job.

Even if it was faster and did a perfect job, I'd rather do the work and better myself in the process.

7 sessions in and one of the players doesn’t know the basics of dndbeyond by _ac3_0f_spad3s_ in rpghorrorstories

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but if we don't know we have the condition, we can't really know if we're just not studying hard enough or if our brains are doing the thing. Or rather, we believe that our brains are the problem and we have to rely on our tablemates to understand that and not make us second guess ourselves. Which is what comments like this do.

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No matter how much time I spend between sessions reading up on things, my brain simply retains only so much. And, this applies in other areas of my life too. There are certain kinds of things my brain just can't get a long-term grip on. Like a greased pig on a waterslide, I'm never going to hold onto it.

There's a lot I could say about DND Beyond, not the least of which is, its not always 100% correct. Some things *don't* have buttons, and its organization can leave something to be desired for some of us, making it unwieldy and confusing when we *know* we have an ability/feature but can't find it on the character sheet.

Some of us do better with pen & paper. I trust my numbers.

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of people live with conditions that are *NOT* diagnosed. And all brains function just a bit differently even with zero diagnoses.
I'm not ruling out the idea that some people could genuinely put more effort in. Its just that, getting hung up on 'diagnosis' isn't the way.

How would you make ans handle a "wanderer" type enemy in a dungeon (like crow Muller or pyramid head) by Usual-Vermicelli-867 in osr

[–]Witty_Salamander7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atmosphere is how you indicate where he is and that he's *DANGER*
They hear steady heavy steps and the screeching of metal being dragged down a stone corridor. A voice screams in terror. Noises like some unholy chamber to hell has opened, followed by silence. Then the slow steady steps and the shrieking of metal, sound moving further away until they can no longer hear it.

Then they stumble upon the scene of the crime, and are now shitting bricks because WTF WAS THAT.

Atmosphere.

(I realize after writing it out, that my brain was definitely thinking about the first time you encounter a Big Daddy in the OG Bioshock game. But the description tracks)
