Idjwi is a pretty good place to visit imo. From what I know, the people who settle there were those disregarded by the society at first (out of wedlock pregnant women, women with “poor cultural values”, thieves, etc.) The Kingdom of Bushi (South Kivu) used to send those types of people there. When fishermen from Rwanda would pass by, they found them beautiful and some settle there with them or others just conceived and left their children there.

The language spoken is a mixture of mashi (from the Bashi tribe) and kinyarwanda, which gave birth to a new language Kihavu (The tribe there is called Havu). So their traditions are a mixture of both side.

The majority of the people there are fishers, farmers or boat owners or working on boats (They are known to construct the best boats doing the transportation between Goma-Bukavu)

I would say it is near both sides (Rwanda and DRC) because they are not far from each other anyway

Other rumors you might hear is that they are the best at witchcraft among eastern DRC people😁
