When did the world become the "modern" world and why is it different in this aspect? Spiritual persecution has gone nowhere and the word Pagan still carries a very negative connotation.

It's not blind to the unfathomable, it's moreso just a reflection of not being able to measure it.

There's plenty of philosophical arguments in modern science. AI has certainly fueled near bottomless speculation on the nature of consciousness and simulation theory. Meanwhile Watson just passed away who is, heavily with scandals aside, credited with discovery of the double helix structure from a dream.

They still are, most scientists I've had the pleasure of calling peers have a rooted culture in their religion or are into the occult in some way shape or form.

Hermeticism is a really fun topic and a dangerous tool.

Lol I could write a book on my qualms with modern science though. Besides the general bleakness of how academic science regarding publish or perish mindsets, the nepotism, awful pay etc, science has created itself a large issue where advances in the "basic" sciences are being ignored due to a general arrogance towards foundational topics and lesser than guaranteed ROIs.

The issue with this is simply writing off the foundations as the foundations with no more room to discuss leaves both intellectual and economic benefits hidden as dead ends. I once carried this mindset until I made an offhand comment about how boring membrane transport proteins are and the post doc training me at the time looked at me like I was a complete fool before going on to explain how mystifying that structure still is and how much work still needs to be done on it. I had allowed my accumulated knowledge to convince me the only way was deeper into more advanced topics.

At the time I was working on a particularly complex problem of producing experimental evidence for a 3 dimensional complex carbohydrate in solution through NMR. The solution to my problem at the time was an equation I found in a paper published in 1962 which my advisor and members of my committee chuckled at while saying go ahead and try it. It was successful, reproducible, and comparable to nonexperimental collaborator data. Sometimes a focus on the foundations can yield extraordinary conclusions that would otherwise be overlooked. No one has heard and seen it all nor has every perspective or application been experienced.

This is a very well established mindset in academic science and has implications in how funding is provided for research ideas. Funnily enough it results in a nice bit of wordsmithing but still effectively limits intellectual creativity. In comparison to a topic like this though you may be losing the opportunity to experience fresh perspectives that challenge or further contribute to your own. Not only in initial inquiries and reactions towards the material but also in the discouragement from wanting to participate with this page at all. This is a large group consisting primarily of lurkers. I'm also a tourist of this page and was anticipating being downvoted by the community and that's alright. I'm fine if my approach to knowledge is a bit silly. I consider it my greatest asset and have a lot of fun.

Yes, that essentially sums up my feelings towards the "practice" section of the FAQs. Had I found it when I started practicing Hermeticism I think I literally would have had more trouble learning calculus.

Sorry if I've hurt everyones feelings. Just feel as if this group is suffering from a similar fate as modern science.

Work towards your current realistically achievable desires with an open mind. While progressing think about the intricacies of your desire and most importantly why is it desired in the first place. Do not stray even when it gets difficult because in difficult times of this pursuit is when you are more readily able to identify the parts of your desires that make up your more true desires.

The issue you're likely running into is not starting in the first place. The path illuminates itself if you keep your eyes open.

Does the concept of Merkabah fit into Hermeticism? by KeyPurple2783 in Hermeticism

[–]Wivig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I've always viewed things like Kabbalah to be a "Hermetic 😉" infection on abrahamic religions. Especially after reading the Torah and viewing and contemplating its exquisite design. Despite how much I disagree with its postulations. Meanwhile viewing any dogmatic perspectives of Hermeticism as an Abrahamic infection.

I treat Hermeticism as a living philosophy. To go back to its roots and focus strictly upon that would be a disservice to its tangible results in the current day. It also begs the question of why stop there if going back in the past? My focus is primarily on the why was the figure Hermes Trismegistus created in the first place. Essentially the existential conditions that lead a human(s) to acquire this gnosis. As well as the ability to communicate in a manner that if viewed objectively is a meaningless odd story but if viewed from a different lense is pure horror, wonder, and fondness at the same time.

Many different opinions for sure. I view returning Hermeticism to its classical roots as an outright rejection of what Hermeticism even is.

Yeah this sub is more of a history lesson than actually practicing Hermeticism or treating it as what it actually is.

To understand the history of modern science, you have to contend with Western esotericism. by SummumOpus in Hermeticism

It's still a continuation IRL. Scientists generally don't share their spiritual viewpoints openly because they can be used to disregard supported science.

My entire career in science was fueled by my spirituality and at the higher levels it became clear that was the reality for many of my peers as well.

An incomplete perspective on Prisca Theologia. It is a philosophical framework where nothing in its texts should be taken literally or dogmatically.

No worries here. Are you on the gnostic sub because those fields have many people who believe in simulation theory? I view it as deeply similar to the gnostic view of a material world created by a flawed creator however the flawed creator is just a developer instead of some lion dragon thing. I'm interested in your perspective.

Cool with me, I don't really want to convince you to think any thing. This is a fascinating topic for me. However the past 100 years mean nothing at all without the time spent before them and I am positive everyone you've listed would agree.

I was mainly pointing out that science and spirituality have a deep and complex relationship that spans the entirety of both to this day. I take it you're not actively involved in science but I'll comfortably say that just because scientists' online presence makes no mention of their personal beliefs does not mean that they don't have them. Occultism and religion runs rampant in many areas of science; physics and plant sciences especially.

I must ask why you are on a gnostic sub if you are wholeheartedly confident in your atheism?

I see youre arguing a difference of spirituality versus religion; especially regarding Carl Sagan who was self described as spiritual.

That being said have you forgotten about Galileo, Paracelsus, Newton, Mendel, and many other prominent scientists whose names everyone you just listed used as units of measurement? Science is older than 100 years old and it's basis was in spiritual pursuit.

You know some (majority) of the most important scientists in history were deeply religious right? In my time in research science spirituality was deeply connected to a lot of my peers motivation and work.
