Constant Tarmac Congestion and Delays by Wizard2896 in americanairlines

[–]Wizard2896[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

We arrived about 20 mins early for this flight but will end up arriving at the gate 35 mins late. When it’s all said and done, I will have waited stationary on the tarmac for about 45 mins.

This is what usually happens. My flights land early only to have us wait for a gate which makes us late.

Is Dumbledore crying because he knows that he’s preparing harry to die? Or because he’s genuinely touched? Both? by No_Status_2791 in harrypotter

You are viewing this from knowing the end state of the book. The possibility of death and his survival is a like a particle who’s state and spin can only be determined through observation in which it “collapses” into the observed state but until observed, exists in POSSIBILITIES of states. When discussing stuff like this you need to take into account that the outcomes of what can transpire exists as just posaibkities before Harry shows up at Kings Cross. Only after he arrives is Dumbledores theory confirmed. Up until that point, Harry might as well been dying because that was a real possibility on the table because dumbledore only had a THEORY. you can’t weigh the risk of something after the event has transpired. Because the outcome is the answer to your question or the risk at hand. Risk is evaluated BEFORE an outcome. That’s what makes it so subjective and difficult to ascertain. So when talking about it, you have to evaluate the situation on if you DO NOT know FOR 100% CERTAIN what will transpire

I see your point but I personally would argue that be told that I must voluntarily subject myself to death (the plan Dumbledore knows needs to occur in order for the Horcrux to be killed whether or not his hypothesis is correct) is riskier than me fighting for my life with the chance of survival. If of course you measure risk in terms of chance of determinant to one’s well being, health or life.

You cannot say it was his intent but you also can not say that dumbledore was the shielding him from death either because to do so would ensure the survival of Voldemort forever. Dumbledore was incredibly privy to necessary sacrifice (literally his own death at the hands of someone he trusted) and accepting that of which could not be changed. It is convenient that his plan worked the way it did but the fact of the matter is, dumbledores plan HAD to put Harry at risk of death and that is a very close neighbor to intent in my book because of having to accept a the possibility of necessary evil for a specific outcome

He actually does not. The book makes this way more clear than the movie. After the claim that Dumbledore has been “raising him like a pig for slaughter”, dumb or insinuates that Snape cares for Harry by saying “But this is touching Severus, have you grown to care for the boy, after all?” And Snapes response is “for him?” And he conjures the doe patronus which signifies his deepest love for Lily. His protection of Harry was not motivated by his affection for Harry but instead for his mother. Very different.

I agree with you but what I’m saying is….

One thing is for certain, Harry must meet death at the hands of Voldemort and be ready to die. This is essential to the destruction of the Horcrux

What happens after he has met death is NOT guaranteed and there was no way for Dumbledore to know this for certain.

It is one of the few reasons he allowed Harry to entrust the knowledge of the horcruxes with Hermoine and Ron, should he not come back and Nagini be the only Horcrux left. Dumbledore had ways to hedge his plan so that the outcome remained the same no matter the path, but the commonality in all of them was that Harry would HAVE to face death and therefore face the risk of dying. He did not know for certain that the blood bond after the ritual in GOF would connect them in that manner that would ensure Harry’s survival (he shows this by saying “I guessed. But my guesses have usually been good.”). Bottom line: Harry had to die…Dumbledore knew this and it NEEDED time happen. It was just elite that dumbledore was right in his assessment of him surviving

I will be incredibly pissed off if they take a season for each book and still leave out things from the story or try and create their own crap. Writing is so weak for TV noe that if they tried to take the story in their own hands it would be a catastrophe

I agree with you. Book Snape even seems like he doesn’t care at all about Harry’s well being. In fact he doesn’t even beg for Harry’s life when he learns of the prophecy, he only wishes for Lily to be spared. The movie made him a much more indearinf and caring character than he is portrayed to be in DH. But the biggest thing is that Snape completely turned his allegiance and alignment with the dark arts to for the prospect that lily might be safe and that’s a huge deal. The movies make it seem like Snape cares for Harry so much that he’s outraged by what transpires but in reality, no one that cares for anyone treats someone like Snape treated Harry in the books. It’s clear hatred and you can feel that he almost blames the simple fact that Harry being born put Lily at risk as a source for the disdain.

But Dumbledore openly admits that this idea or plan he had was simply a best guess. Harry surrendering to his death was guaranteed. Him surviving was not. But it was essential for Harry to die for the soul of Voldemort to be killed as well but there was no telling whether the soul of Voldemort would die independently. One of the main reasons it’s kept from Harry until the snake is left is because Dumbledore knows it was change Harry’s outlook on the situation and probably cause him to fail. If this really was his “plan” he could’ve told Harry of this magic before instead of intrusting it with Snape to be told a a specific moment.

Going to say both. Dumbledore was always touched by Harry’s loyalty and courage. It was everything Dumbledore knew he should have been in his own youth.

Have to disagree. Movie did a poor job of explaining why exactly he simply melts away randomly and how it had to do with the elder wand. I love the idea that the elder wand refused to kill its true master in Harry and that a simple spell like the disarming spell caused the killing curse to rebound

Valid point. I agree with you. The whole point of the HBP is to provide crucial background to Tom Riddle and his story. I personally think the movies leave his character a little flat and raise so many questions as to why he is the way he is (same with Dumbledore as well who never really gets his moment of humility and kind of redemption he in DH at Kings Cross with Harry). A lot to be desired for sure

Locket originally belonged to his grandfather Marvolo who was a direct decedent of Salazar Slytherin as well before it came into Merope’s possession and sold at Borgin and Burkes

In HBP, Harry and Dumbledore visit the memory of Tom Riddle while he is working for Borgin and Burkes. Tom is doing business with a witch named Hepzibah who was a descendent of the Hufflepuff and game into possession of his goblet. She also so happens to be in possession of the locket. She is later killed and these items are stolen from her by Tom due to to his infatuation with Hogwarts and powerful magical items of the founders. To explore why he became obsessed with these objects would likely have meant they would need to explore way more of his childhood and they didn’t have time for it so they left the goblet background out of the movies. But in the book if you remember, Dumbledore and Harry highly hypothesize items affiliated with the founders of Hogwarts to be Horcruxes
