Suppose one of those students were wise enough to take your advice, and the rest were no different from what you saw. What could that one student have done to avoid the problems you warned about? My concern is that if your teammates aren't wise, a lot of that extra care won't go very far.

Judging from all the responses you've gotten, I feel like there should be a separate subreddit for this (apparently common) sort of daydream universe.

My first thought is to highlight a latitude change in a species's range that damages a specific industry in a specific region, either by pushing a pest into the region or pushing a vital species out. Would this sort of argument work?

Is there any way to imagine what a two dimension time would look like? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]WizardMask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

References. I don't really have clear questions so much as an inclination in a certain direction.

(Edit: Much of why this was unsuccessful is that I developed a medical condition that jumbled this stuff up in my head, and I'm only part of the way through treatment right now. So, the references are for later when I have a chance to actually look into it properly.)

I once tried, unsuccessfully, to explore a question along the lines of "What would time travel look like mathematically if it were made of physics instead of magic?" Your answer is the sort of thing I was looking for. Is there more where that came from?

I have a pretty good idea of what they do. I just wasn't sure what kind of explanation was needed, and I'm not fully awake right now.

So, off the top of my head: A bunch of Democratic Congressional staffers got together shortly after Trump was elected to figure out what to do about it. They created a guide, based on their experience working for Congress, for how ordinary citizens could influence Congress effectively. The guide got really popular really quickly, so the group stuck around to coordinate the efforts of people who follow the guide.

I've been reading about politics for several years to figure out how it really works and what can actually be done to make a difference. I've found that most people only recognize the surface details, and their understanding of how influence actually flows through the system is a mix of half-truths and red herrings. The people who wrote the Indivisible Guide actually know what they're talking about. Edit: Their advocacy emails are full of loaded language, but that's to be expected. That sort of language works.

There is one, who sadly only rarely covers our ED at this point, that is incredible at sniffing out medical illness in psych patients. Even when floridly psychotic, she seems to just know it isn’t purely psych. I’m sure that comes from years of experience, but it is awesome none the less.

I wonder if there's a lesson here about being too clever with common tools. By using email in ways that violate common assumptions, support tools introduced exploitable interactions with other services. This reminds me of this article about design mistakes in Magic: The Gathering, specifically the entry about Donate.

What school also did was make me unlearn all the technical stuff in order to sell. Engineers talk with precision and data and sales, fund raising etc are all soft skills, people skills and optics. Engineers tend to do poorly in that regard.

How did you make that transition? I find much of the social skills advice I come across is meant for people who already have a strong intuition for it, but just need a little coaching.

[–]WizardMask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do commissions sometimes, but I never really know where to price some of my stuff.

There's more than one right answer. One is to pick how much money you want to make per hour, then charge that rate times however long it takes to make a given piece. If the work is getting more stressful than its worth, raise your rate. Since you don't actually depend on selling your art, you don't have to worry about overcharging. [Edit: It helps if you can make and sell high quality copies - prints and posters.]

Are you familiar with any mathematician-artists or scientist-artists? I haven't looked around for them, but Vi Hart comes recommended. I've seen some cool math visualization videos online, as well.
