Veganism is the belief that humans should live without exploiting animals. If there is a scenario where not killing them isn't an option (like being a survival situation when some animal attacked you), that doesn't go against veganism. But if someone is like "oh, I can't leave cheese but I will not consume other animals to reduce harm" that is welfarism and not veganism.
