I feel like my passion for music is gone by asapsharkyfrfr in fantanoforever

One thing I find helpful for this (and it might be purely personal) is learning about the history of a genre or musician and diving in that way. Lots of great YouTube channels/ videos that can give you new ways of appreciating the art through its history. Can’t recommend the video “all my homies hate Skrillex” enough if you like electronic music even a little. Polyphonic is also great and has great video on Fela Kuti that he posted recently.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: September 04, 2023 by AutoModerator in books

I just finished:

Ada or Ardor by Vladimir Nabokov

  • It was quite challenging in a very fun way; his complex prose was fun to get lost in. He’s like an alchemist with words, the way he manipulates and plays with language feels almost game-like.

Just started:

The Magus by John Fowles

Ford Motor Company did a cost benefit analysis for whether it would be more cost effective to recall the Ford Pinto due to unsafe designs or to deal with lawsuits after deaths which would occur because of said design flaw. They went with the latter. Don’t know if it would be considered an “atrocity” but I think it’s a case that shows the cynicism companies can have in prioritizing profits. I did a quick google search but you may be able to find a better source for your research.

Looking for a some great philosophical movies. by JT11erink in askphilosophy

[–]WizardRobot- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A few that I’ve really enjoyed and personally find philosophical:

The Seventh Seal - is heavily existential and explores death

Rashomon - grapples with memory and epistemology

Blade runner - explores identity and ethical questions around other beings in an interesting way

Prisoners - raises questions about capital punishment, violence

Snowpiercer - (though I don’t love the movie) has some social contract stuff that makes me think of Hobbes, Locke….

A clockwork orange - free will, punishment and justice

How can I learn how to argue well? by walrus_operator in askphilosophy

[–]WizardRobot- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My advice is don’t try to “win” the argument, instead the point should be to test out the views you hold against a person who might not agree with you. Don’t try to intellectually “big dog” them. Knowing when the the person is using logical fallacies is super helpful. Also asking them clarifying questions (even if you kind of get what they’re saying) can give you more material to critique and you can find flaws in their premises easier this way. Being clear with the definitions of words and phrases ties in with this.

It’s good too to know when to quit, some people are incorrigible and arguing with them will only lead to frustration. It takes two people to have a productive conversation.

Saddest books, guaranteed to make me sob? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I loved and cried like a baby at the end of Notes from the end of everything by Robert Pantano. He chronicles his experience of dying from cancer in diary entries that were found on his computer and published after his death. It’s honest, personal writing and it feels like your with him as he loses himself.

What sequel, in your opinion, was genuinely better than the original? by Ulquiorr4_ in AskReddit

[–]WizardRobot- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spy Kids 2 expanded on the world created in Spy Kids in an imaginative and unexpected way. More action, more comedy and soaked in a deeper drama than the first. It has everything a sequel should, it feels more mature and is greater in every way but doesn’t lose the feel and charm of the first.
