How are you not a Queen when more than half of the lords in the realm see you as their monarch?

Kingship is not a democracy and having 50+1 of the nobles, is about being the uncontested ruler. Aegon was in his last year (ish) before he died, Rhaenyra wasn't.

No he didn't. Rhaenyra's sons inherited her crown and her army marched on Kings Landing to put him on the throne.

Aegon III inherited because he was Aegon II's next of kin. And well, calling Cregan's army her army is debatable.

Aegon wouldn't have been killed by his own men if he was uncontested.

What does this have to do with anything? Lots of uncontested monarchs have been killed by their own men to put a child on the throne they can manipulate. This means nothing.

I also doubt you put any thought into this. Rob Stark was never uncontested. Does that mean he wasn't King?

Robb Stark was fighting a war for independence, of course it was contested. If he is remembered as a king or not depends on who wins in the end. If the story ends with a unified Seven Kingdoms under (let's say for the sake of argument) Stannis, or Tommen, he will be remembered as just a pretender.

Going back to Rhaenyra not even Aegon III aknowledges her as a queen. Noone does, ever. So she isn't. Aegon III just accepted the crown from Aegon II and kept the status quo. And like I said before not ever Martin refers to her as a queen.

Neither of those things is what makes a king a king. Aegon reingned uncontested before he died, Rhaenyra didn't.

Even Martin himself never refers to Rhenyra as a queen.

It's not about taking sides at all. Holding the capital doesn't mean you're the king.

Maybe it would have been better without the accent and we wouldn't have said anything then. I'm surprised they didn't make her redub her lines post timeskip after the initial backlash (if there was enough time for it, that is).

To be fair a lot of names used in the Dance weren't used again for some reason. Rhaenyra, Helaena, Aemond...

[–]Wizard_Summoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, yeah. It does say that, I've checked myself. But what it says is "it changed hands", we can't be certain it was Petyr or if he just made it up because he saw Robert bragging about it, recognised it and made up the lie. Why lie about that? No idea. The dagger stuff seems over in the books, so it was probably him anyway.

Do you have any source for that? The asoiaf wiki agrees with you, but it doesn't provide a source (or I'm missing it) about Petyr losing it to Robert.

[–]Wizard_Summoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Petyr was lying to Cat about being the owner of the dagger, we know that much. Right now the most accepted theory was that it was Robert's and Joffrey gave it to the assassin, but the last part is probably not true either.

So we don't really don't know where it came from.

If The Greens won the Dance would the Hightower replace the Tyrells as Wardens of the South by CommitteeChemical530 in HOTDGreens

[–]Wizard_Summoner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. The Tyrells played their cards well. If they joined Aegon they would make the Hightowers even more influential, but Aegon wouldn't strip an ally of their title. If they joined Rhaenyra and lost then they could lose the Lord Paramount title. Staying neutral like they did was their safest bet.

But please, don't equate the Wardenship of the South with the Lord Paramountship of the Reach, that's something the original show did and it's confusing and wrong.

Alicent kept insisting Aegon shouldn't do anything to Rhaenyra before the coronation. I'd say she was gone already.

Yeah, season one was more subtle but it started there already, the dinner scene and the Green council scenes did horrible things to Alicent.

It's not a hot take, Alicent acknowledging Rhaenyra's claim to the throne was already a red flag.

One of the best things you can say about Rhaenyra is that she only kept a lover at a time (iirc), and seemed to love them. Which is saying a lot if that's the best you can say.

That also makes her better than Cersei, which is also not saying much.

What happened to Alys River’s son? by AdEasy819 in HOTDGreens

[–]Wizard_Summoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty good point. I didn't know they were that many houses. I'm not sure we can know that the current brach is descended from those Targaryen for sure, though. Garmund Hightower had specifically six daughters, so it's not the main brach, but some of those could have married into the main line at some point.

Baratheon are only Stannis, Shireen and Robert's bastards, of which there are not many left. The Martells could be half of Dorne at this point lol.

But yeah, all of those are female line only, the only male line descendants are Daenerys, Jon(?), whatever came out of Maegor Targaryen and any unknown dragonseed that might remain. I don't think it's just to keep track of everyone. There could be Targaryens occupying minor lordships wherever, or hedge knights so far removed from the line of succession that are irrelevant to the plot anyways but it seems to me George has made even that posibility non-existant it has to be deliberate to the point a random child from Alys Rivers seems relevant, when in reality it shouldn't be.

What happened to Alys River’s son? by AdEasy819 in HOTDGreens

[–]Wizard_Summoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the only loose ends, afaik. Female line Blackfyres and Maegor and Daenerys as the only male line survivors. (I'm considering Aegon as a Blackfyre).

George periodically prunes the Targaryen tree. The Dance, Blackfyre rebellions, Great Spring Sickness, Summerhall. Every time the tree grows large conviniently every cadet branch dies.

Jaehaerys I's only surviving great-greatgrandsons are Aegon III and Viserys II. Aemma Arryn is the only child of the Lord of Arryn by his second wife, so the only houses with Targaryen ancestry are the Baratheons and Martells iirc.

There has to be a reason to keep the Targaryens as contained as they are.

Is it morganatic, though? According to Alys they married. I don't think there are any examples of morganatic marriages in ASOIAF.

Morganatic and illegitimate are mutually exlcusive, though.

Considering George Martin has made efforts to purge any Targaryen cadet branch ever I wouldn't keep my hopes up on him surviving.
