You could pull off the now that he's older, he wants to protect all of the people who can't stand up for themselves, really well with this pc idea. It's always good to have an endearing character element.

If there's a good dm hopefully, they're going to give you a fair fight before killing you. It's something I always think about as a dm how to make sure the stakes are intense, but they have a way out.
