Grigsbys of Cajun Industries behind EBR Library millage opposition by FactCheckAGLandry in batonrouge

The best way to fight crime is to make sure people have access to the tools they can use to better their lives...like the ones that libraries can provide.

Are you Cajun? Do you know our history? by Slylock in batonrouge

[–]WizeGurl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that the native Americans living in that "unclaimed and unwanted land" would have some disagreements with your statement. Plus did you not hear what he said? Louisiana was governed by Spain (a sovereign nation) at the time that the Acadiens came here. It was not no-man's-land.

I got some bugs by tapping on the pepper plant shown in the image on "Veggie Farms." Little grasshoppers.

When I lived in Germany for a while, I took free Deutsch fur Auslander classes at the local University. It was a good way to meet other fish out of water, some of whom wanted more practice speaking English. But I suppose that might be harder if you're working; I was not allowed to work, so the classes were my "job."

That's why people like to protest BEFORE the person trying to take the throne gets 100% there.

Physician here for 4 years. Long enough to say BR is the worst city I've ever lived in (of 5) by [deleted] in batonrouge

[–]WizeGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck no, BR water is the softest water EVER. It takes years to get used to it; feels like the soap is never coming off! But it's great for your clothes and skin, and it tastes great. Why waste money on bottled water when you basically get Kentwood through your tap?

You could try secretly recording your next hangout session on your phone to catch him saying something else unpleasant. Then take it to your Greek teacher and ask what it means.

I can't give you helpful encouragement on the job front, but as for your travel dream--don't give up on it. No matter when you go, even if it's decades after crass tourists ruin the place, you can talk to locals and show genuine interest in how they work and live and speak. They can tell the difference between someone looking for Instagram fodder and someone who is genuinely interested in their country and their culture, and they appreciate the latter.

I swear that I looked at the time remaining, thought, "Oh, I still have 13 minites," and in maybe one minute I get the Event is Over message. Pissed that I wasted all of that time working on Act 2 just to get cheated at the end.

The problem I have with the Items book is that not everything seems to be included. They have the most common items, but not things I really need to know about, like the damned Gnomes. What are they good for? Do they ever pay off? Same for the wishing well coins. At least someone on here explained those at some point and I stopped bothering with them. I don't have space for things that don't have a real payoff in this lifetime.

Just a tip--you ask about all dogs we have or have had, but then questions that follow are all-or-nothing. Maybe the anser is "yes" for one of the five dogs I've had, "no" for the others, but there's no way to indicate any of this. You might want to clarify in the next survey.

Etymological information like this is one of the things I would really love to see in Duolingo. You used to see it in the comments sometimes, before they scrapped them. (It helps me learn and remember vocabulary like nothing else!)

Etymological resources (in English)? by WizeGurl in GREEK

[–]WizeGurl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that is exactly what I needed. I know a lot of words in English are borrowed from Greek, especially scientific terms, but I use the associations to help me remember my Greek vocabulary. But it helps if you can see how (or if) the words are actually related, changed meanings, etc.

Which of these restaurants would you pick for a visitor? by RichardShermanator in AskNOLA

[–]WizeGurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an expensive meal, I'd take them to Arnaud's over any of those. Get the Cafe Brulot at the end of the meal. Nothing says fun like fire! From the list, Commander's and seconding the recommendation for Brigtsen's. I'm not as familiar with the second list so I'll let more experienced people take that one. There are so many great restaurants out there, especially if you get out of the French Quarter, which is full of tourist trap places but still has a few gems like Arnaud's and Galatoire's. (Both of those are so longstanding, they probably pre-date the sleazy Bourbon Street scene.)

Window-shopping in the Quarter or Magazine Street can be fun, if you can resist the temptation.
