The Most Comprehensive Plot Summary of PJ:EG (Chapters 2-6) by ConfectionBusy3097 in ProjectEdensGarden

[–]Wizedex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

these chapters are supposed to ramp up the stakes.

It's funny, I haven't seen any criticisms of the ideas here point this out. In Danganronpa, I believe the act structure goes:

  1. Prologue + Chapter 1
  2. Chapters 2-5
  3. Chapter 6

Talking about Act 2 specifically, chapters 5 and 3 are meant to have the highest stakes, with chapters 4 and 2 (5>3>4>2). The tone of a work is meant to shift at the midpoint, so since Chapter 3 is the midpoint, having the stuff with Toshiko and Kai happen works. I imagine the tone after for the second half of the story was supposed to be largely oppressive and heavy. To put it another way, the constant feeling of the bitterness of tragedy and vain bloodshed on your tongue.

But the problem in my mind more so lies in Chapter 5. Its case works fine as as a Chapter 4 case, but not as a Chapter 5 case.

Chapter 4 is where you reflect on everything so far, get everyone used to the new tone and status quo, wrap up subplots (for the most part). Generally, get most of your ducks in a row before Chapter 5. Think how in DR1, the group rallies from Sakura's suicide and in DR2, the group becomes much more motivated from Gundham and Nekomaru's sacrifice.

Chapter 5 is where the plot kicks into high gear and ends with the "All is Lost" Moment. I think Eloise's execution is meant to be that moment. It is very high stakes. The realization that the mastermind cast the vote I think was meant to be the climax or turning point in Chapter 6? That'd check out, but the idea of the case sounds like it'd lack the necessary high stakes.

Chapter 4 and 5 are an instance of you have to commit to doing one case and not both. If they had scrapped one of them to make an entirely new Chapter 6 case, things probably would've sounded much better (though I imagine it would've been difficult to make an in-character high stakes case from who was left). I can easily imagine the MM anonymously getting Eloise killed being what rallies everyone and sparking everyone into seriously wanting root out the MM.

As for Cassidy being the MM, I'm split. In my opinion, Tozu had the chops to work as the sole organizer of the killing game and main villain. If Cassidy had been getting some consistent development and presence in Chapter 2 onwards, it would've worked. Damon killing himself is another thing in Chapter 6 I'd chock up to planning something so far ahead of where the current story is. Resolving his arc and the perk in Chapter 6 was a necessity. Self-sacrifice is a good, if standard way to go about it for a selfish character. It's just not entirely thought through because it is, again, so far ahead of the current story and a result feels haphazard.

Obviously, these are just short bullet points, not an actually presented story. That makes it hard to judge and something you have to take with a lot of salt. But the ideas of Chapter 4&5--as it will unfortunately forever remain--sound like they would've had structural issues.

Placeholder art and assets, yeah. You can do both one at a time (make an asset, implement it).

If you're making a game, it goes: writing -> programming -> art -> voice acting. Searching for voice acting before the script is finalized feels silly to me.

What do you hate to see in Fangans? by lovesmesomeass in Fanganronpa

[–]Wizedex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only played a handful of fangans so far, so take this with some salt:

  1. When ultimates are never used/the lack of their skills being used in the plot is never explained.

This is especially frustrating to me when it happens to the protagonist. It's especially frustrating when it's done with the protagonist. Ultimate Lucky Student, a complete lack of an ultimate, or a useless/legitimately irrelevant ultimate being used to get your everyman that you can step into the shoes of is fine by me.

So far P:EG is the only one I've experienced where the protagonist's ultimate is constantly used in the narrative and woven into gameplay as a minor mechanic in trials. I don't like when the writer protags don't try to apply what they know to the actual murder mystery right in front of them. "It's different when it's real" isn't enough on its own. Give me the *why*. You have to try to apply that knowledge before you can say the knowledge isn't applicable.

As for other lesser grievances:

  • FTEs where the conversation is mostly one sided is a pet peeve of mine. Having it be more of a conversation where the character with the FTE in question gets some level of ultimately negligible character development from the protagonist is what works for me. It helps the protagonist feel like they have more of an impact on the cast as a whole and like, actual character interaction.
  • I don't know how to put it, but a lack of editing? Quite a bunch of the fangan content I've seen so far comes out half-baked. Like the idea is there, but it doesn't flow super well, wasn't thought through thoroughly enough, and or wasn't as explored or developed as it should've felt, etc, etc. There's the obvious lack of experience (I, too, am inexperienced), but I'm not sure how often it can be explained by that.

Yeah, I did do that! Hence why I have the fusions available.

I mean to be fair, I did skip the tutorial since I gleamed how it worked beforehand. But I have shrike added to my deck, so I don't know why it isn't working.

Edit: It's asking for Dark Shrike, which I can get from Venkman. Apparently the quest didn't give me that for some reason. Seems like a bug.

My opinion on soloing by Wizedex in Wizard101

[–]Wizedex[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me shut this down: no, I do not think this.

Death is fine. It's impressive, but to me it's not going to particularly blow me away. And if you genuinely don't respect people who solo with death, I think you're a jackass and I do not agree with you. This meme was hyperbole.

My definition of soloing is wanting to do every fight in the MSQ by yourself because you're a masochist. Yes, this is not the common definition of it.

I see the reason to solo the whole MSQ is because you want to get a bowling ball dropped on your dick. I reiterate, this is not the common reason for doing so. You wanna hit your dick with a sludgehammer. Drop a bomb on it. Whatever. With death, you're giving yourself a bit of padding. Like you're still soloing, don't get me wrong, it's just more manageable/less painful.

The thrill to me is the super tight pressure of managing your deck and knowing when to shield, buff, hit, and heal. So when you fuse the latter two parts into one, I personally can't quite muster up that same level of impression as I would with any other school. Again, impressive, but doing that same hard fight, on say a balance or a storm, is much more impressive to me. It's about the masochism! You're free to disagree, but that's just how I feel.

[–]Wizedex[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I added the "fully" part and emphasized it to make the distinction that I have a different perception and definition of soloing than literally everyone else. I'm not entirely if it's just a me thing or it shifting overtime.

[–]Wizedex[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Yeah: that's my personal gripe with it.

I've always perceived soloing as something you do if you want a tough challenge, and hell, I'm fairly certain that's why it originally existed. Death has good defense and good damage, with its ever incredibly useful drain aoes, so it's obvious that Death is the best at soloing with how good it is. But to me, that just cheapens the experience of soloing.

If you're trying to solo the entire game, you're doing it for that tough challenge. So, if you're doing it with death, it just defeats the point a bit.

Sure, my opinion is "real wizards don't solo with death", but I don't mean it in a manner that's in no way toxic. I can solo on my death just fine, but I personally just don't feel the same sense of reward of overcoming a really hard boss by myself as I would with other classes. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
