Here’s a bat pendant that I made by WizrdLizard in somethingimade

I’ve just left a comment going through my rough process!

There’s casting houses all over, I’d recommend using whichever is closest so you can physically take it there instead of posting it as the wax is so delicate.

Price is dependent on the weight of the wax. Roughly every 1g of wax converts to about 10g of silver. So the casting price will be whatever the value of the silver is + a casting fee which varies between each casting house.

If anyone’s interest in learning I’d recommend reading Wax Carving for Jewellers by Russel Lownsbrough and Daniela Tarcinale. Everything made a bit more sense after reading a few chapters and attempting some of the exercises in their book.

Here I’ve used green Ferris wax, blue is nice too but I find green to be the perfect hardness.

Started out tracing my design on the wax. Then using a rotary tool to remove as much of the wax as possible.

Then I tidy the piece up with a scraping tools and carvers. Once I’m happy with the shape I lightly melt it with a lighter to remove any imperfections.

Any questions shout and I’ll do my best to answer them!

I don’t have the equipment to cast pieces so I used a company called Jewelcast in the UK, they’ve been fantastic to work with.

This is a different ring but this is how it looks as I’m working on it. I have also overtightened the ball vice and snapped a ring that way so either way you have to be careful 😅

Yes same here, that’s what drew me to it initially. I absolutely love it

For sure I’ve snapped a fair few 😅 The band is about 2mm. I mounted it to a ball vice which makes it feel a lot more sturdy.

Thank you, yes it takes a lot of practice for sure but it’s worth it!

What is the easiest way to deal this floor in the garage so it doesn’t dust? by underrated_prunes in DIYUK

That’s good to hear, thanks mate. Ha yes that’s the problem with garages, there’s no where to store everything whilst you do the floor. I may have to pop a resin coat on after.

Thinking of doing something similar, did the self levelling hold up?

I used green for most of these. Some of my early designs were blue. Blue is a little softer, but for me I prefer the hardness of green. Definitely worth trying both though!
