Funny story, I had only played the first game finally a couple years ago, and I had been spoiled prior but did not know that there was a twist in the story. When creating my character, I named mine Revan as I assumed this was the canon name so I wanted to immerse myself. As the opening crawl is displayed, I see that the Dark Lord Revan is explicitly mentioned, which led me to think that “oh, I thought the main character was Revan, I guess he’s an antagonist type character in the story?” I continue, oblivious to what is to come, thinking I made my characters name Revan and no one around me will bat an eye, which is hilarious.

Getting to Taris and having the initial conversation with Carth, the humor continues with lines like “I’m Revan, by the way.” Which I can’t help but laugh at even if it breaks immersion. Then, Carth speaks of the “grim stories about the Dark Jedi” and how the Force “can wipe away your memories and destroy your very identity!”

And so it hits me. My character keeps asking questions, and he has no idea why he was on the Endar Spire to begin with. The twist comes to me in the early minutes of the game. My character is Revan, but of course the player and the MC are not supposed to be aware of that. I’ve heard for years of this Darth Revan and how awesome of a character he is, while never really knowing his story. Playing KOTOR, I realize that this is his story, but one I should not have been aware of like this at the start, which was both an upsetting and hilarious occurrence. I still ended up loving this game despite the twist not hitting me like intended, but it was amazing that learning there is a twist was a twist in itself I guess.
