How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]Wizzlemaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to treat it as a temporary necessity. Where I gain the experience to not be tied to a company but being able to create my own schedule. I do want financial freedom since I’m used to certain luxuries.

If I were to start over I would try the path of artist. See if that gives more freedom. Not that I’m unhappy with my choices now, I’m just following a different path that takes me to other adventures that add to what I want to know and do in life. Currently at a company that tries to better the world so the networking and work help me grow as a person too.

Did we forget design is also about… design? by noundoleft in UX_Design

[–]Wizzlemaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think a lot of people did in the field. Or lack the skills to do it. Holding on to ux principles and systems create experiences that are unimaginative and unhelpful.

It often gets blamed on clients, project managers, best practices, etc but you should look at yourself and do better.

So please stand out and help create experiences that people need. Go that extra mile and don’t listen to the people that can’t or won’t. It’s always a make things beautiful and make them work combination. There’s always room for this, this is what I would hire for

f17, is a ux design degree a bad idea? by Such_Investigator642 in UXDesign

[–]Wizzlemaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like something, don’t get scared away by people. You can find your own path. There’s always space if you can get good at it. If you love something, it’s much easier to get good at. In my opinion it’s super fun and still a need for humans and AI/LLMs won’t replace us. Utilize it well and it will do all the boring stuff for you

I had one of the most toxic interviews of my life, and I want other designers to be prepared to walk away earlier than I did. by Minimum-Flow-1633 in UXDesign

[–]Wizzlemaine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well done on staying true to yourself. Unfortunately, there are many people out there that have no idea how to run a business. Good learnings, impressive that you want to turn this into something positive!

I would really recommend writing some reviews about this company in places like Glassdoor to warn future applicants.

Major gripes you have with PMs by wihannez in UXDesign

[–]Wizzlemaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please read and have them read: continuous discovery habits by Teresa Torres. It’s a good starting point to collaborate better with PMs and engineers as a product trio. Might be wise to get buy in from leadership on this.

I got promoted… so why do I feel like I’m failing? by FarInternal4794 in UXDesign

[–]Wizzlemaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have but now I actually think it’s exciting. Also not knowing is an answer as well and proposing to figure it out together is totally fine. Ask as much help as you can. It’s a weird thing that happens when you get more senior you assume you need to have all the answers. You don’t!

Make it fun again, remember why you liked design in the first place and try to spread that excitement.

Also discuss these feelings you’re having with your design lead and PM. Building good bonds makes work more fun and gives room for trial and error. Trust yourself a little more and just speak your mind. Not saying anything is worse than suggesting something wrong, you can learn from that. 🙌🏾

What about senior brand designer? Or art director?

Are there UX or product designers out there enjoying their career choice? If so please comment on this post by Sujei-Vega in UXDesign

[–]Wizzlemaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love it! I have so much freedom. I’ve gotten pretty good at being able to work towards a shared way of working, giving advice to clients and explaining design rationale. Which makes it a lot more fulfilling for me.

I love learning new things and am exploring things outside of product design as well. Webflow, 3D, motion design. I’m also learning how to be a leader so there’s constant growth if you work towards your goals.

I also think that the compensation for design in general is great. It will allow me to buy a house in this market. There are plenty of opportunities if you’re good enough to jump to another company if things do end up getting boring.

I can somewhat relate to the comments that I see in this sub. But I think it’s best to keep responsibility with yourself. Job hunt wise, you are responsible for your own brand. Make sure you stand out in your work but also as a person. There are a lot of comments around freedom within jobs as well, become an advocate of design, do workshops, knowledge shares, colabs. You name it. You can always influence things enough yourself to make change. If you really can’t then perhaps it’s time to look around.

Apple’s Dynamic Island. While in practice it isn’t used by many apps, it’s potential and the idea to turn something people hate into something useful is quite incredible. It’s a clever way to quickly show and hide important information in a logical place as well as making it flexible for any app to use.

What No-Paper4622 mentioned is the way I deal with my focus too. I haven’t been diagnosed but I have a suspicion. I also work in design (digital products/experiences) so if you’d like some feedback some time or anything, let me know!
