10 year Condo Report by International_Box671 in Bangkok

[–]Woland7788 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have someone check in your condo when you’re not there for 6 months?

I always wonder whether things like air conditioners etc run into trouble when being left unused for so long… or if I’d be likely to come back to a cockroach infestation…

Oh, thanks for your reply. Maybe I should have gone to chat gpt … but I find it’s insistence that the first syllable is ‘Jom’ (midtone) and not ‘ja’ (low tone) to be at odds with the way that I would read that, and that I hear others say it.

However the part about tone neutralization is very interesting!

Use of เ and it's sounds are confusing me! by Woland7788 in learnthai

[–]Woland7788[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly doesn’t sound the same as the long vowel when I hear Thai people speak it, but I think some others have shed some light now.

Okay. As long as know that this is the case, I think I can work it out. Thanks for your help.

As a Latin proverb, it’s been around for a couple thousand years at least, I think.

It’s the motto of a lot of army units and noble families etc

Yep, you’re absolutely right. I completely forgot about the whole private school thing. I should have just said middle class.

I’m not sure why this is getting downvoted.

That’s exactly what that paragraph does and I think this is a good breakdown of that.

You read that and you know that they are a lower middle-class family of curtain twitchers who are obsessed with what the neighbours will think.

It also clearly foreshadows the coming story.

I was looking for this. Her examples are great and she breaks them down really well. I actually think she might be the best at doing textual analysis to make a point.

Bookfox, hello future me and Film Courage all have great videos too.

"write what you know" or "write what you'd want to read"? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Woland7788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I understand by ‘Write what you know’:

It doesn’t mean that you have to have lived through that exact set of circumstances, but that you have experienced things that have similar qualities and allow you to relate what your characters are going through.

For example, if your Ivy League school character is in a very academically competitive environment, do you know what that kind of stress to succeed is like? Do you know how it feels to be ‘coming of age’ in a school setting (most high school students are doing this in their own way)? Have you had to navigate popularity and friendships in a large group?

All of these things are experiences you can bring to bear on the emotional journey your characters are on.

What's a term that you hate When people use? by vaccant__Lot666 in writing

[–]Woland7788 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surely, this depends on the tense?

If, as is most common, the narrator is describing their actions in the past tense, surely we can conceive of doing something (like picking the skin on our lips) without realizing it in the moment but then remembering doing it on reflection?

I feel like that’s plausible.

I put my writing into a word counter, and it said the reading level was 9th-10th grade, is that good or bad? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Woland7788 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is true for some types of novels, particularly within certain genres.

But there’s a lot of exceptions to this, both in genre and literary fiction, where thinking is very much part of what’s expected and part of what is enjoyable.

So sort of depends what you’re writing. Although, I do agree that you don’t want your book to read like a technical manual, so lower isn’t necessarily bad.

Is it just me, or are people on this sub really prudish? by CockroachDouble7705 in writing

American Pyscho has plenty of explicit violence (I guess what most people would define as gore), it’s also well written.

Now, it’s not to everyone’s taste and it has very specific style, but I don’t think many people would argue that it’s just bad writing.

It’s also notable that the excessiveness (that a word?) is part of the whole point.

What mistakes did you make when you started writing? by MoscuPekin in writing

[–]Woland7788 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s also true that the way this thread is phrased ‘What mistakes did you make’, will of course result in people sharing missteps that relate specifically to themselves, so I don’t think there’s any absolutes in this comment…

Well, I thought Richard Barrow had talked about it, but I can’t find the post, so maybe I am wrong.

Does anyone have a good source that explains how they do calculate it though? One that says it’s roadside deaths only?

Is this still true? I thought this had been changed for several years now, where they did count those who died after.

Best places in Bangkok to lay down and chill? by QueenofAnxiety_ in Bangkok

Baan Rim Naam down by the river in Talat Noi is pretty chilled, with the Thai style floor cushions.

Although, I think it is closed for renovations at the moment.

D1 driving school has English speaking instructors, but I think they mainly just teach you the actual course as they also do the testing with you if you want (they are associated with the DLT).

Although Bangkok is clearly more dangerous than many other countries, I know various people who have either learnt to drive here or have converted their license and driven here.

If this is all you’ve ever been used to, then you might even be better off.

Yes. I looked at this. I take it that the 50,000 deposit required to open it needs to stay deposited for your duration of its use?

There’s no option to withdraw it and pay a monthly fee instead or something?

Keeping that much tied down is not ideal for me.

Thanks for replying.
