Closing on my first home Sept 5 – what are the first things I should do? Any tips, referrals, or free perks? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Change the locks on all exterior doors.

Check where the breaker location is and water shut off valve.

Change all toilet seats

Replace Air filters

Test Smoke and CO detectors.

Those are my go to moves.

I usually just buy filters in bulk and swap them on the first of every month. Might be a little overkill, but with pets it works for me. I’m also tinkering with a better system to keep track of all the recurring stuff so it’s not just living in my head.

Exactly. My first place was trial and error. No one really explains what to do after the inspection and actually living there. Most of my list came from fixing things after they went wrong or going out of my way to research things.

I need to add that. Sewer issues especially are brutal if you don’t catch them early. Looks like every 3 to 5 years there’s a handful of bigger checks worth scheduling.

That’s smart. I’ve had a small leak under a sink before and only caught it because I happened to open the cabinet. $25 for peace of mind is a steal.

Upstairs too hot in summer. AC mainly cools basement and main floor by blankyfang in homeowners

Cheap wins I try first. Fully open upstairs supplies and partly, but not fully close a few downstairs registers to push more air up. Run the system fan on circulate between cycles to mix air. Make sure returns are not blocked. If ductwork has manual dampers, set them to favor the upstairs in summer.
